NU players receive banquet honors

Cory Ross received offensive MVP honors on a vote by his teammates. He also received offensive player of the year by the Media which hands out the annual Tom Novak Trophy.

Adam Carriker recived the defensive MVP on a vote by his teammates.

Sam Koch received special teams MVP honors by his teammates (he ranks third in the country in punting and sadly was not picked as an all conference player on special teams). He also got the Chamberlin Trophy award by the media for the best special teams player.

Titus Adams received the Cletus Fischer award which is handed out by the coaches for the most improved player overall.

Leon was the offensive scout team MVP (He is officially on offense now). Adam Kadavy received the defensive scout team MVP award.

Kurt Mann and Dane todd were also honored for their earlier recognition as Academic first team All Americans by the AP.

The banquet was held at Lincoln Station

Congratulations to all the Huskers who won awards tonight. The visiting recruits were also in attendance and enjoyed their time as well. They ate well and had a chance to meet up with the rest of the coaches who were on the round tonight and returned home for the banquet.

Lincoln- Six Nebraska football players were honored at the Huskers’ annual team banquet held Saturday night at the Lincoln Station in the Haymarket.

Senior I-back Cory Ross received two awards at the banquet. Ross was chosen as Nebraska’s Offensive MVP in a vote of his teammates, and was also presented with the 2005 Tom Novak Trophy, as voted on by media who covers Nebraska football on a daily basis. Ross is a two-year starter at I-back for the Huskers, leading the Huskers in rushing both seasons. The Denver native is also the only player in Husker history to rank in the top 10 in both career rushing yards and career receptions. The Novak Trophy is presented to the senior who “best exemplifies courage and determination despite all odds in the manner of Nebraska All-America center Tom Novak.”

Senior punter Sam Koch also received a pair of awards at the banquet, taking home both the Special Teams MVP award and the 2005 Chamberlin Trophy, also by a vote of the media. Koch, native of Seward, Neb., averaged a school-record 45.87 yards per punt in 2005, and was recognized as a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award. The Chamberlin Trophy is presented to the senior player who has shown by the play and contributions to the betterment of the University of Nebraska football squad that he has the qualities and dedication of Guy Chamberlin to the great Cornhusker tradition

The Huskers’ third senior award, the Cletus Fischer Native Son Award, was presented to defensive lineman Titus Adams, a native of Omaha, Neb. The award is presented annually to the senior player selected by the Husker coaches, who best exemplifies the following qualities: good work ethic, competitiveness, leadership, forthrightness, sense of humor, pride, loyalty and love of Nebraska. Adams is a two-year starter on the Husker defensive line, and led the unit in the regular season with 49 tackles.

In addition to Ross and Koch, three other Husker most valuable players were announced at Saturday night’s banquet. The most valuable players were selected by a vote of the Nebraska players.

Junior defensive end Adam Carriker was named Nebraska’s Defensive MVP.

Carriker’s Big 12-leading 9.5 sacks paced the Blackshirts’ unit that led nation with 46 sacks. The Kennick, Wash. native totaled 17 tackles for losses on the year and 19 quarterback hurries.

The offensive scout team MVP was freshman Leon Jackson, a native of Pasco, Wash. Jackson is a reserve at safety, but doubled as a scout-team receiver for the Huskers. On the defensive side, the scout team MVP for the second consecutive season was junior linebacker Andy Kadavy, a native of Seward, Neb.

Nebraska’s academic award winners, including first-team Academic All-Americans Kurt Mann and Dane Todd were also recognized at the banquet.

Approximately 400 people attended the Saturday night banquet. The winners of the Chamberlin and Novak Trophies and the Cletus Fischer Native Son Award will also be honored as part of the Outland Trophy Banquet in Omaha on Jan. 12
