CRETE, Neb. -- The Shrine Bowl is Saturday, and two teammates on the South Squad will get pretty familiar with each other over the next four years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Future Huskers Ben Martin of Lincoln Southwest, and D.J. Jones of Omaha Central are getting a head start as teammates. Just three weeks from now, they'll take to the practice field for the first time as Huskers.

"I'm really excited for it," Martin said. "It's going to be a whole new level, the intensity, and everything. It's going to be crazy. An awesome experience."

"I'm ready to get this game going," Jones said. "Show them what we can do, then get down to Nebraska and show what we can do there, too."

Since the Shrine Bowl is played at Lincoln's Memorial Stadium, the pair will end their high school careers in the same place they begin their college careers.

"It's going to be a little weird knowing that that's where I'm going to be playing anyway," Martin said. "It's going to be pretty cool -- get a little taste of it before it actually happens."

Both players have been working out in Lincoln with current Huskers on conditioning drills and lifting weights during the week. But nothing can prepare you for the daily grind of being a college student-athlete. Especially when it comes to learning the playbook. Husker head coach Bill Callahan's list of plays is legendarily thick.

"I haven't really held it yet," Jones said. "I'll do that in fall camp, but I saw Zach Potter's last year, and it's just a big ol' book. Big binder full of plays, and we have to know all of them."

For Jones and Martin, life as a Husker is just around the corner.

"They were talking to us last week about moving our stuff into the new locker room. It's just really starting to set in on me, that it's about to come," Jones said.

Jones will play on the offensive line, while Martin is expected

I hear JONES was kicked out of the Shrine game ?
ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct
Jeez, he must have an attitude to get kicked out of an all star game. That is what I like to see from our OL. Big, nasty, mean guys. Now he just needs to be able to control it a little so it doesn't hurt the team.

So you're saying you want an Incognito out of him that has more control over himself? I'll take it. :thumbs

Incognito was the first person who came to mind. I loved the way he played and the way he stood up for his teammates, but I hated how he got penalties in critical situations that hurt the team. I would love to run the ball behind Incognito though. He is what I envision the typical lineman as: mean, nasty, and tough.

Mean, nasty and tough is all well and good. I just don't wanna see a 15 yard flag in a crucial part of the game.

i hope this is not a precursor of what's to come.....unless it was really flagrant (whatever the activity was..?) he better learn how to control himself........

Since this discussion shifted itself towards Incognito, I thought I'd throw this in there

ST. LOUIS - New St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan has promised a physical training camp, and that seems to be just fine with former Nebraska offensive lineman Richie Incognito.

"That's for guys like me," Incognito said. "Guys on our offensive line who like to get down and dirty and get physical."

Incognito needs the work most, considering his last time in a full-contact situation was the 2003 Alamo Bowl when he was at Nebraska.

Disciplinary problems ended his college career after that. He didn't play in 2004 after leaving Nebraska's program and then Oregon's program. Incognito, a third-round pick last season, spent the 2005 season recuperating from a serious knee injury.

"I'm very anxious, very anxious," Incognito said. "You've got to ask me in a couple of days how big a jump that is."

Incognito was the first-team left guard ahead of last year's rookie starter, Claude Terrell, at the last minicamp, and Incognito expects the pecking order to be the same heading into training camp.

"Yeah, it kind of feels like my job to lose," Incognito said. "But I still have a lot of things to get down, and I know I have a lot of great guys behind me and a lot of great guys competing with me.

"It's going to be an interesting camp for all of us."

If Terrell finishes ahead of Incognito, the former Husker could push Andy McCollum at center and Adam Timmerman at right guard.
