I just flagged this guy as a spammer, but I think we should perma-ban him. I originally thought it was wifi, but now I'm thinking it might be BourneSupremacy or ze Bop or whatever he was calling himself.

Here's his post, which I'm leaving up for entertainment purposes. I removed the link he left for the same article on Scout. http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=204&f=4511&t=12110300

His email, nvoting @ yahoo, traces back to a guy in Wisconsin (the IP of hudson's post resolves to Madison) who posts on Wisconsin Sports Network and the Wisconsin/Nebraska 247Sports site.

Here are those profiles

Wisconsin Sports Network

Is there any chance Bourne/ze Bop is nebraskafaninwi?

Not zE bOp - the posting style doesn't match up. IP used by hudson doesn't match any other member, but I agree it sure looks like wifi. Ban it is.

The ban isn't for that post, it's because there's about a 90% probability that this is a former banned member coming back under a different name.

Then anyone can circumvent a ban, continue their bad behavior and basically be an a$$, based on what you just said.

DJ, are you referring to banning an account of a formerly banned member, or are you talking about banning based on the suspicion it's a formerly banned member? If the former, that rule has been in place for years - it was there when I first became a Mod. Chad had set that up. If the latter - yeah, I see your point, but over the years what we've seen is that when it is a legitimate new member, they contact us and ask why they are banned. Formerly banned members that try to rejoin don't. The number of banned members that try and rejoin is actually pretty small, and it's amazing how they tend to post in a manner that makes it easy to spot them again.

I am referring to the banning of someone on the suspicion that it is a banned member. I am all for banning clowns, but the post didn't violate any rules, and there was only a suspicion it is a former banned member. If we have an IP to link them, same/similar email, etc. Perhaps I am in the minority here...

I see your point. I guess the best response I can give in addition to my first post is that the problem members who have been banned and try and return usually use a proxy and end up with a different IP. They also use free email accounts. So, most often, we don't have anything that links the two. We usually ban in those cases when we are almost certain it's a former member - the posting style, some slip of the fingers when typing, etc. Otherwise - and far more often - we just post our suspicions and monitor the account. If they behave, we let it go. If they give themselves away by engaging in the same or similar acts as before (and their posting style gives them away), we nail them. Before we started doing that, we'd get guys like zE bOp who would create multiple accounts and start posting sh#t - which defeats the purpose of the ban. And, again, in cases in which we err (and they have been less than a handful) the member contacts us and we lift the ban.

I agree that mere suspicion isn't good enough. As long as they aren't violating the rules...then again, I am OK with retread posters too, mainly because it's not going to be possible to stop people from re-registering anyway and I'm not sure it is worth the effort.

In this case, the poster appears to have done a flyby copy/paste on a number of Husker message boards. I would guess 3 - here, Scout, and most likely rivals (the reference to 'RSS members'). The thread itself seems OK and the ban may have been premature, but on the bright side, it seems pretty questionable that the poster ever intended to be a part of the HB community. I don't personally do a lot of pre-emptive action, though if this was in fact done in error, it can be at least be easily reversed.

By the way, is it true that he misspells 'critique' the same way nebraskafaninwi did? That's pretty uncanny, if so.

Fair enough. Like I said, I've been out of it a while and just popped back in yesterday, so my radar is probably not as strong as it was. My bad guys, I need to get back on more or ETR is gonna start charging me for the priviledge of being a mod.
