Actual Spring Practice Updates

Pelini said he likes what he’s seen from Colorado transferAlex Lewis. Lewis got some work with the ones at left tackle on Wednesday, and Pelini said that though Lewis is “swimming in it a little,” he’s been playing with a good motor. “He has experience which obviously helps, and he likes to compete, which obviously helps.”

Josh Banderas gained about 10 pounds in the offseason and said he still feels comfortable playing at a little bit of a higher weight. He’s been working at the BUCK linebacker spot, and the change was made in order to get Banderas and Michael Roseon the field together at the same time.

Nathan Gerry is working exclusively as safety now. That was a change that both Gerry and the staff agreed on following the end of the season. In moving back to safety, Gerry said he actually gained 10 pounds, and is up around 215. That means he played last season at right around 205 pounds. He said he feels comfortable at the spot, and that he worked this winter on loosening his hips — something that he said he has long needed to work on.

Former Husker and NFL linebacker Barrett Ruud has been around the team as he decides whether he wants to get into coaching at some point. “He’s a volunteer,” Pelini said. “He’ll be out here and observe. He missed football and wanted to see if this is something he wants to do in the future.”

Defensive tackle Kevin Williams is back practicing after tearing his ACL last year during fall camp. That’s two major knee injuries for Williams, who said he briefly considered hanging things up last fall, but decided to stick with it after conversations with his mother and Jamal Turner, his closest friend on the team.

Jamal Turner took the bulk of his reps at wide receiver on Wednesday. “He’s worked at quarterback, it’s not like that’s something new,” Pelini said. “He’s a wide receiver we could have a package for if we need to.”
