Trev Alberts

I have to admit to knowing very little about the UNO situation, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

But doesn't it seem a little odd that Alberts would come in a cut two succesful programs just because he wanted to. Surely there are many other factors (and people) who were driving that decision? That surely wasn't just his idea or plan was it?

Depends on who you want to listen to.

Some of the misinformation or plain lack of knowledge is disturbing.

1. It's public knowledge Alberts let them know over the phone they were cut. It was in the newspaper and reported as fact. Locked them out of the building and couldn't even get in to get their stuff, after just winning a National Title. - That alone is true lack of class

2. Why are so many of you still using the financial excuse? Wrestling was self sustained and in fact, ahead on money! And moving to D1 would not have changed that at all. They would still host the same tournaments and same clinics that brought in the money. Little known fact they hosted many huge youth tournaments that brought in big bucks, so money is a piss poor, made up excuse. They made their own money and a surplus of it.

3. They would have competed just fine at D1 level. They already competed in many D1 tournaments as it was and many of their wrestlers beat highly ranked D1 guys on a regular basis. UNO got a lot of guys over the years that were sought after D1 recruits.

All in all, football got cut so it wouldn't compete with big brother UNL. Wrestling got cut as an excuse to start hockey. Title IX, money, or any other excuse is just that, an excuse. As far as UNO hockey being the only hockey in the state, that's bs too. They have it in Kearney. Although it's not college. Trev has no character and certainly no class. And quite honestly, nobody outside of Omaha cares about UNO hockey to my knowledge. In fact, I had no idea it almost got cut until a booster came in. Maybe it's not the gravy train it was supposed to be? That would have been funny. I'll assure you there were many outside Omaha that followed and loved UNO wrestling and football.

And if the move was for UNO basketball to go D1, why? They're not good, and heck, UNL is not good at basketball either! Wanna save some money? Cut those programs!
UNO had hockey well before the move to D-1 and the cutting of wrestling. Also, you can't compare the hockey that is played in Kearney, Lincoln, and the Omaha Lancers to UNO hockey. The Lancers, Stars, and Tri-City Storm is Junior Hockey played by 17-18 year old high school kids. UNO is at the top of college hockey and has gotten great crowds in Omaha for years.

UNO probably doesn't care about people outside of Omaha. They are trying to position itself at Omaha's "state school" and that's fine. UNL will always be #1 for most Nebraskans, but getting a decent crop of students from the Omaha metro area and being a school of 15K students is great for UNO.

Finally, I never wrestled and I never played hockey. But, if I had my choice of going to a college hockey game or a college wrestling meet on a Friday night, I would choose hockey. I think the average person would agree with me.
True, I shouldn't have said start hockey but should have said build hockey. What's the difference though of 17-18 year old kids and college hockey? Not much! My point is, there really was no good reason to cut a self sustaining National Champion program!
Actually Junior's is played by 16-20 year olds. Some kids even turn 21 after the cut off date & get an extra year.

I think cutting westling sucked, but it was done to let the University compete in sports that the summit league offered. It was a sacrifice made to go to D1. Same reason they dropped football. The overall goal was to get the University into a D1 league that would support them being in a seperate major hockey conference. Yes for UNO hockey rules the athletic budget, the same would be said for NU's football team.

My question is why was it 2 men's sports? I don't know all the intricacies of Title 9, but if they cut one men's wouldn't they have to cut a women's program too?

It's over and done with, and it sucks, but regardless of what the driving factor was, Trev is the man that did it. He did it without class, as Eagle1 stated. The DOORS WERE LOCKED and the team couldn't couldn't even get into the facilities to get their stuff the night they won a championship.

Whatever though, I'm done talking about it. People outside the wrestling community will never get it.

So the hockey team might one day be as good as the wrestling team actually was?...and how is hockey a less expensive sport than wrestling?

It's apples to oranges. Hockey generates a lot of revenue that is used by other sports programs.
Hockey attracts 7-8k fans every home game. How many fans went to wrestling duals and meets?

Now figure the expenses... $82 million for the hockey arena, $50 million still unpaid... and how much for a couple of wrestling mats?...trick question, the mats were already bought and paid for.

I see the armchair ADs are out in full force this week. /facepalm
That's quite the rebuttal for some valid points brought up against your boy Alberts, fuzzy Title IX arguments, even fuzzier math, and poor treatment of the national championship wrestling team.

I accept your surrender.

The point is, none of you have a clue what the job entails, what the vision is of the people you're mentioning, or how things actually transpired. So your speculation is exactly that. Therefore, you're nothing more than an armchair AD applying nothing tangible to the conversation other than a bunch of guesses.

$50 million debt is not speculation, it's math.

How the wrestling team was treated less than 24 hours after winning a national championship isn't speculation, it's history.

There was also letting football players sign letters of intent and letting the football coach make a hire that the administration had no intentions of honoring. Those are facts as well, not speculation.

Trev Albert's previous job history consisted of a lackluster NFL career that got him onto Bleacher Report's "50 Biggest NFL Draft Busts of All Time" list (No. 27, to be exact) and then he was fired at ESPN for failure to show up to work . This sparkling resume, matched with an unbridled ego made Alberts the perfect guy to be the hatchet man for what transpired...plus, he looks good in a suit.

So I am not going to argue whether one likes him or not, because that is an opinion, and one can't argue opinions. But the above are facts, armchair ADs or not...except the suit part...that's an opinion.

I said this in another thread, but what qualifies Trev Alberts to be AD at Nebraska? And "he played at Nebraska" doesn't count.
I'm not saying he is. I just want people to understand what happened. Almost everytime i see something said about him on here a snarky remark about him coming in to get rid of a program happens. People have no clue.
But also, what qualified Eichorst? B/c he did it at Miami and WW?

What qualified TO? He'd never done it before.

Or Bob Devaney?

Or Stevie P? B/c he did it at Pitt?

I'm not so worried about a person qualifying for it as much as fitting the AD position at Nebraska. But i do know i definitely dont want someone who is brought in to just do the Weasel chancellors dirty work. And i say that being a fan who wasnt really sad to see Bo go.
Bob Devaney AD/ HC at Nebraska dual job
