If the football team buys its players something at fair market value then it is fine. Though I'm sure there is some fiscal limit. "Shenanigans" occur when athletes are given benefits outside the university by boosters, etc that are not available to the rest of the student body. Buying players on recruiting visits generally falls into the second category.

I think those are ok if it's fair market value. But only in the south

 
If he opened up his recruiting, he is gone. Don't think I have ever seen a kid do that and stay at his original school

Naquan Jones, 4 star DT, just did it this year with Michigan St. He decommitted in early November and then recommitted less than a month later. That is definitely the exception, but it does happen.
