Good interview of Banker about the D and some glaring stats

amazing thing about our pass defense is that we played 4 teams that could pass the ball efficiently (so miss, Michigan st, miami, and ucla) but every team shredded us through the air. Hard to play that bad of pass defense against teams with that poor of wrs and qbs. I do think the future looks much brighter on the defensive side of the ball as we recruit more talent on the back end

I was also surprised that our run D, thought to be good was not when looking at that article. Looking at 2015 stats, we gave up 3.77 yards per carry, 18 rushing TD's, but we're 9th overall. (While having the lowest rush attempts for the season of all FBS 379 against NU for the year). Had teams run more, the opportunities were there IMO.

Throughout the season, I forget who, posted a teams average passes per game and then their percentage against us. IIRC, everyone was higher. Had teams run more against us, our run D might have looked as bad.

I have optimism for the D this year. More depth, complete buy in (understanding of system) and possibly addition by subtraction. I also think Coach P might be that X factor we have been missing.

That's what I've been trying to say for some time. The rushing yards per game stats look better but a lot of that (most/all of that?) was because teams didn't want to or didn't have to even try to run the ball against us.

Eighth in the conference in yards per carry allowed. That's not a great run defense, imo.

So maybe there was more to it than the players not buying in?

Senior safety Nate Gerry, a captain, said he’s enjoyed the switch to Banker. At times last season, Gerry said, the terminology he’d get from Banker and Stewart during games didn’t match, and it could lead to some confusion.

“Some of the terminology you might use for safeties and cornerbacks can be different,” Gerry said.

Agree. Nothing about being 8th in the league is "good". Even worse when you look figure teams ran at us less than their average and that in 2015, we were the least run on team in FBS.....

It's good this is/will be addressed. Perhaps not guy's buying in or reverting to old schemes, but simply safeties "hearing" one call and CB's another. Wasn't it in 2013, NU had a similar problem and they went to wrist bands on the D?

The entire point of using yards per carry (where we ranked 8th in the B1G) is that how much teams ran on us doesn't matter, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here.

Maybe it ties into the narrative that people used to defend the scheme because even though we had a historically bad passing defense, we were "good" at stopping the run.

Going from 77th in rush defense at 4.7 ypc to 9th and 3.7 ypc is tremendous progress no matter how you want to spin it.
Going from 4.7 to 3.7 is improvement - though it was almost identical to 2013.

Going from 77th to 9th was mostly a function of how much our opponents ran against us and how good their RBs were.

I give them credit for making a lot of plays. I just don't think it was as drastic of an improvement as many people like to claim. I'm not convinced that it was that different from what we had been doing - though I also think we weren't as bad previously as others like to think either. We had a few individual games that were horrible. But we weren't as bad most of the time as many people think.

The perception of some isn't backed up by the statistics.
