Target, Bathrooms, & a PC culture

So we have Target going public wt its policy that any person can use any restroom depending on their gender identity and not their gender birth (and genital features)

We have the NC law limiting the same to traditional gender specific restrooms.

We have Trump trying to make hay over it politically now that he is trying to win more liberal NE states (he of course said nothing in NC).

Did Target over reach - potentially alienating 99.5% of the population for a very small minority of Transgenders? (This isn't a gay issue but a Transgender issue)

Are the PC 'rights' of transgenders to be trumped (no pun intended) over the vast majority of the population?

At what point do minority (not racial) sensitivities need to be ignored in order to maintain an orderly society? (Anyone can claim rights or sensitivities regardless of merit.)

Finally, how soon will one of our liberal friends on this forum accuse me of being a "hater" for just bringing up the opportunity to talk about this honestly?? (Liberals only like free speech if it is liberal speech)

My take: This is a PC over reach by Target. They risk the sensibilities of the vast majority of their customers to accommodate the sensibilities of a tiny minority. Who will they need to accommodate next? As expected there are already 'boycotts' being organized against Target now for this policy.

Trump made the argument against the NC law based on economic ramifications to the state. However, since he failed to stand with traditional conservatives on this issue, he has revealed his NY values, his liberal leanings and as a man without core values - saying one thing in NC and @ Liberty Univ and another as he campaigns in the NE. I predict he will loose support and cause him in part to fall short of the number to win the nomination.

Why is this even an issue? Transgenders have been using the bathroom of their gender identity for years and somehow now it's a major concern?

I have young children. On several occasions during road trips or shopping I have heard the panic stricken child say "I need to go potty, NOW!"

I find the first gas station or restroom I can find. As my child is doing the peepee dance I find the mens room either too filthy to be used by my daughter or it was occupied. A clean womens restroom was being unused next door so without hesitation I take my child in to use it. When we exit the restroom a woman has been waiting. EVERY time I exit with an "excuse us, we couldn't hold it" and EVERY time the woman has smiled and said, "trust me, I understand".

My point is, that under these "restroom laws", I would be committing a crime and putting myself at risk of being labeled a sex offender by entering the wrong bathroom. This is one thing I agree with Trump on, it isn't a problem, we don't need any new laws to explain how to use a bathroom.

Maybe I don't understand the law - if the unintended consequences are as you note, then the law went to far.

My question is Why has all of this come up at this time. Is it over reaction to the gay marriage court ruling or what (and that wouldn't make sense as transgender isn't the same as gay - but they all get lumped together in the LBTG label). It seems like everyone is reacting to something - NC, Target, Trump, ME

as in my post - reaction to Trump. So what started the whole 'issue'? Maybe someone can bring light to it.

When a company makes the kind of decision Target made, it is based on a careful calculation of how it will affect the bottom line,. My guess is that for most people, it's a non-issue and Target wants to appeal to the largest shopping population possible.

What makes this an issue is fear-mongering and opportunity. Bring up a virtually non-existent "problem", demonize it, then act as the crusader that will save civilization.

This looks like a really basic policy adopted by Target, one that will likely become increasingly common, that basically affirms transgender people by saying "Yes, you are people too." In the sense that going to the appropriate bathroom is something almost everybody gets to have, rather automatically, as part of their "being a person" experience. I'd not enjoy having to use a women's room, for example. It's basic, but it's great. Let's not take that away from anybody.

As a practical matter, who would ever know? I mean, women's restrooms have stalls. Or at least they did the last time I used one. (Hey, the men's head was clear at the other end of the hall. And it was a late night at the office.) And wouldn't a transgender male (with female parts) also use a stall in the men's restroom? If (s)he did use a urinal, well, I'm not quite sure how that would work. #FirstWorldProblems

Isn't it PC to tell men and women where they can and can't go to the bathroom? Whatever happened to the good old days when we could just pee in the forest?

My situation happens thousands of times per day. The situation the law is aimed at preventing (a transgendered person assaulting another person while using the restroom) is rare if ever happened at all, anywhere. Both situations involve a person with the wrong genitals going in the wrong room. To add, there are already laws against lewd conduct and sexual assault. A "pervert" can still be convicted of a crime if he/she truly is a "pervert" and does something "perverted" in the restroom. But if simply "using" a restroom is a crime, there will be unintended consequences.

Actually, not sure I have ever met a transgender person before, though I guess it's all the cool thing to be nowadays. Have met a few folks that I'm almost certain were cross dressers, not sure if they were all the way "trans", didn't ask.

Actually, not sure I have ever met a transgender person before, though I guess it's all the cool thing to be nowadays. Have met a few folks that I'm almost certain were cross dressers, not sure if they were all the way "trans", didn't ask. A gay guy tried to put the moves on me one time in a beach bathroom in Maui, but it didn't scar me for life--he was, how shall I say, unsuccessful.

As an aside, they have those "baby change" stations in many bathrooms these days, which is an easy and convenient way for parents who are frustrated with their baby to, you know, get a different one, "trade up", so to speak.

There aren't a lot of them in America. According to a Williams Institute study from 2011, there were approximately 700,000 transgender persons in America. That's only 0.3% of the population, so not a large community.

I know *of* two persons in my daily life, although I don't *know* them. Of the hundreds, maybe thousands of people with whom I'm acquainted, that's a tiny percentage.
