Avery Roberts

Maybe it was a calculated decision?  Frost doesn't hand anything out until it is earned and he likely isn't ready to put any walk-on players on scholarship yet?  It's a stretch I know...

No. He didn’t purposely lose 2 scholarships because he didn’t want to give them to walk-ons.

These players still might’ve waited til it was too late so doing it earlier might not have prevented it. Who knows.

First year issues, it happens when you're trying to change a culture. These things won't happen nearly as often in subsequent years. No drama, just releasing the scholarships and move on.
Frost had to give the returning Riley guys a fair chance to get with the program or move on.  Most of the guys responded, but a few didn't.  I also think that going forward it will be easier to get players off of the roster after spring/prior to summer, so it will help with scholarship numbers.  But, there are always going to be guys who decide to transfer at the last minute.

Good point. This is the First Thing that might have a bit of a mismanagement that we've seen from the new regime.

Absolutely not. The message is you compete every day. Everyone is trying to take your job every day. That depth chart is for fans and the media, it's meaningless to the coaches. They want a lot of guys that they can trust. They want to be able to rotate heavily. It's an opportunity buffet for these guys.

It's possible you missed part of the news. Reports say that Will Jackson left the team after he was placed on the scout team and was not on the depth chart for playing time. This was information only for the players and the coaches, not for the fans or the media. If he had known on Friday he may not have wasted a scholarship that could have gone to a walk-on. Or maybe he still would've waited too long. Who knows. The point is, releasing it on Friday could have possibly prevented that and possibly prevented Roberts from also wasting a scholarship. Since their exits were almost simultaneous I believe Roberts also found out he was on the scout team or far down the chart.

Always a bummer to lose a player however this is a good thing.  Drive a tough program and folks will leave, this is far better, and shows more integrity on the part of Avery than athletes who basically quit but stay.   From an HR prospective the worst employee is the one that quits but doesn't leave.  Also if no athletes leave it may  indicate that the staff is not setting a challenging environment.
So Barnett is quiting on the team by giving up playing due to concussions but staying on campus to finish his education, something totally normal, but Robert's is showing his integrity by leaving the team since he wasn't going to be handed a starting spot?

I don’t believe that post had anything to do with Barnett. Pretty sure the “quit but stay” statement was made in reference to players who just stick around on the team and go through the motions and not about a kid with concussion problems that is staying to finish his degree.

That depth chart is so fluid it doesn't matter. It truly is a constant competition the way they do things.
