The Village of the "Banned"

Or.......let them start posting again!

Because who f#&%ing cares?

Every now and then I wade back into an old thread and marvel at the perfectly interesting and/or entertaining posters who got banned, and I honestly don't think this place is better for it. Just smaller.

I just can't get over how incessantly Redux whined and whined and whined about not being treated fairly in P&R, moaning about people calling him a Trump supporter, echo chamber, blah blah blah.

While all this time he had an alt-right sock account :rollin  Jesus Christ, man. I personally don't plan on ever letting him live down how hilariously pathetic that is, if/when he comes back.
Who said he had a sock account?

Disagree. It's actually somewhat difficult to be banned from this place. The people who have been banned have earned it (with a couple of exceptions), and we're better off that they've moved on.

Like knapplc said, you have to try to get banned from here, so I don't really have any sympathy or interest in the people who accomplish that feat. Most members (particularly ones who have been around here awhile) get tons of chances to follow rules that basically boil down to 'hey, don't be a d!(k.'

There are plenty of places to behave like an asshat on the internet and we don't want/need the equivalent of a drunk party-goer taking a dump in our punch bowl.

(P.S. For the record, some people have been allowed back. But, there are a select number of people who behaved so poorly and went so far over the line that a permanent ban was an absolute necessity).

I'll have to take your word for it, because in many of the cases I never saw the Banned cross the line in the actual threads I frequented.

At least no more than other posters who weren't banned. Including myself.

If these people got a private warning or public reprimand and fought it, based on selective enforcement, I can see how it would escalate. It can be pretty infuriating. I had no trouble with most Mod interactions.  But couple Mods pulled some really cowardly s#!t.

If some of the Banned felt singled out for their football or political beliefs, they might be paranoid. Or maybe not. Because there seems to be a slant to these things. Seriously.

I'm sure there are specific  incidents I'm missing. But I'm also missing posters who made this place livelier. They weren't all yahoos. Some were pretty sharp cats. And some of the yahoos were worth a laugh. It takes literally a fraction of a second to scroll past posters I don't want to read.

Serious question: are these recent posters getting banned for the content of their posts, or because a Mod detected a sock puppet account?

Maybe if you named someone specific who was wrongly banned, that would help.

But if you're basing this belief on what's publicly available then you're getting the wrong information, because often when someone melts down, the posts that got the person banned are moved to a forum only Mods have access to.

Rusty Shackleford, for example, was a sock one of our other members was using to troll the board. Not sure if both accounts got banned or just the troll sock account, but Rusty definitely should have been banned.

Mixed bag. Anecdotally, seems like we've had a rash of socks recently, but they're clearly coming from select individuals. It's also obvious they're not here to contribute to the community but to continue their dips#!ttery.

But, there are also quite a few who have violated board rules and earned themselves a ban.

Some of the now banned members people often say they 'miss' are gone for very, very serious reasons. Others are gone because they broke the rules too often and too egregiously. The rules are what they are so I don't lose an ounce of thought over it.

We're also acutely aware that some of these people have tried to profess their innocence in other public forums (i.e. social media or other message boards) over the years and, from what I've seen, they tend to have a very personally sympathetic version of events.

Two questions...who gets "reported" the most?  Just tell us!!!  Please!  Ha

Also...is it hard to tell/see their IP addresses?  I remember hearing that if you just unplugged your modem/router for a few minutes that you get a new IP address.

I'm not going to blanket defend every action.  Because there are myriad situations.  And sometimes it's hard to determine the exact course of action while trying to remain consistant and fair.

But considering you don't have any warnings yourself, I'm assuming you're getting this "information" from others who were on the receiving end.  And based on some situations I do have first-hand knowledge of and how that got repeated out on the main board, vary rarely is what is made available for public consumption exactly what happened let alone the whole story.
