Tangent Thread - P&R Edition

Don't many Asian countries regularly wear masks - partially due to the flu (and probably also due to smog/pollution)?

A useful comparison might be to look at deaths/million in places like Japan/China from the flu (where masking is more consistent) for, say the past 10 years, vs the U.S.
Yes they do and I have done some research on this in the past and I'm pretty sure I came to the conclusion masks must help big time. Pretty sure both countries do far better than we do with the influenza though its been a little while so I can't say that positively.

Reminds me of a show my SO loves to watch called 90 Day Fiance. One version is called The Other Way where Americans go to other countries to marry people. One of the couples lives in Korea and the mom of the Korean son in one episode is wearing a mask the entire time because she has a cold. That stuff is just common practice there and maybe it should be here as well

I'm curious on others thoughts on this board....if Covid-19 was killing kids at the rate of older citizens - would you then be mad that Trump calls this the Chinese Virus? I truly believe we would already be in a World War with them if that was the case and way more people would be on board.

No, I am not saying he is right for saying this at this time or we should be at war - I just feel since it isn't kids then people kind of let a lot of things slide.

It's not China's fault the US has fallen on its face in response to this virus. Whatever China did, it affected the whole world the same way it affected America.

That the rest of the world responded to this better than America is a reflection on how poor our leadership is. The guy in front of the podium spouting off about malaria drugs instead of leading a comprehensive national response got us to one fourth of all infections and one fourth of all deaths in the world, not China.

It turned out that The Spanish Flu that killed 50 million worldwide most likely originated in an American army base in  Kansas.  Still, I kinda want to kick Spain's a$$. Or Kansas' a$$. I'm not picky about a$$-kicking.

I was shocked to learn how many people die of the flu each year. 2017-18 was a record year for influenza fatalities in the U.S.  and I swear that number was 60,000 when I looked it up to make a snarky comment in February. Now it's been bumped up to 80,000. Don't know when or how that happened.  35,000 is more typical and that's still a lot.

Americans tend to brush off the flu, but the doctors and epidemiologists never did.  The same scientists have been begging Americans, particularly older Americans, to get flu shots each year -- even made it free and easy at Walgreens --- but our willingness has been spotty.

150,000 COVID deaths in five months of the most stringent counter-measures ever enlisted should create a little distance from the flu, but it's probably better to think about them as a package deal rather than competitors.

Speaking of competitors: will football players compete in 2020?

Now you can't move this post to another forum.

What has China lied about exactly? Wet markets aren't something to start a war over, and if you've been paying attention, COVID did not originate at the Wuhan wet market. To be frank, the devastation the US has suffered is a direct result of US leadership, nothing more nothing less. To start a war because of your own incompetence would be the definition of stupid.
So the entire world basically is incompetent? Again, there are 8 major countries who have more deaths per 1M residents than we do.

In a sense yes. People didn't listen and didn't do what they were warned to do. What did China lie about ERN? How exactly is it their fault?  To the point if it were killing a different age group we should declare war on them? How exactly is that logical at all?

UK, Spain, France, Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Peru, Chile all have more deaths than the USA per 1M residents.

That's not counting some countries who have the population of Lincoln, NE

To be completely fair Brazil is behind us in deaths per million. We are at 461 they are at 418

Australia, UK, Canada among a few other countries did their own investigation and all found evidence of suppression of doctors and scientists who tried to say how serious this was, bleaching of the market stalls, destroying labs, and initially denying human-to-human transmission.

I'm sure that's comforting to the families of the 140,000 Americans who have died.

It's also ignoring all the countries who have had lower deaths per million residents.

It's a really callous way to look at this, and pretends that we couldn't do better. We could have done better, and that's on us, not China.

Cool stat, but it sucks at illustrating how things are right now. All those countries got slammed in End of March, Early April and have since be able to get things in check for the most part - which is the key to returning to sports. Belgium 1 death yesterday, Spain 2 deaths yesterday, Italy 11 deaths yesterday, Sweden 1 death yesterday, France 14 deaths yesterday, UK 119 deaths yesterday (Sucks but still 1/2 the deaths per capita than the US).....US 1266 deaths yesterday.

I never stated we couldn't have done better as I think we could have.

I'd love to see an article detailing their findings.

P.S...... there isn't one.
