I have coaching friends all over the country and I’ve worked extensively in California. I get email and Facebook messages from some of them monthly. 
 

see the below article with data from Forbes according to them football is declining and it is “declining at an accelerated rate-“ and the game will be regional long term. 
 

Long term football will be a regional sport. The numbers have already crashed programs in the northeast and now the far west. Cte. Less participation in team sports, high costs It’s just an absolute fact that  in some areas of the country football just isn’t important and is now considered to be part of a bygone idealistic Americana that many would like to see go away. 
I tracked down an article from Forbes this am that talks to what I’ve seen first hand almost to the letter

NCAA announcing cfb playoff and starting basketball seasons this fall says f-u to the Big Ten !   This forces Big Ten to rethink their cancellation of all fall semester sports which now effectively includes BB.   Big Ten going to have explain allowing BB but not VB somehow.  lol. 

And AP poll including Big Ten teams is a direct teaser to the Big Ten by stirring the fan reaction for all those rated teams who dont get to play out a promising season nor compete for anything in the spring.  Heck AP may not have polls for spring teams - effectively saying that spring fb means nothing.

Pretty much. The big 10 has a national title contender in football (Ohio State). National title contender in volleyball (Nebraska) Possibly others since our volleyball conference is stacked.

Yes that may have been very true in the last couple of years, but the pac12 is a joke now and from a long term perspective football is going to be in Texas and Oklahoma for a long time, California. Oregon, Washington, Colorado-not so much. That limits options a bit and the big 10 isn’t letting in an Oklahoma state, Kansas state etc

lol, wtf does this even mean?  I can guarantee you, football is going to be in these states long term just as much as any other state lololol

I also wouldn't call the PAC 12 a joke.  Sure, they could certainly adjust how they broadcast their team's games... I don;t think Friday night pacific time zone and being relegated to 5 pm/ 7pm pacific time zone games is best for the competitiveness and exposure to the nation and they certainly need to change this.... but as a conference, the Pac12 has been pretty damn stable and made up of very large universities- many in very large and influential population centers in the country

Perhaps the participation of football at the youth level is declining relatively faster than other states but most of the schools that matter in PAC12 are already relying on the Texas, floridas of the world to get talent on top of having california (most populous state?!?!) right in their backyard

Lack of elite football success doesnt necessarily mean a mess of a conference

Just as a quick point of clarity, Nebraska isn't the only title contender in Volleyball.

Wisconsin is the odds-on favorite, Nebraska is in the mix, as is Minnesota. And you can never really count Russ Rose out in Penn State, although this doesn't appear to have the hallmarks of his classic national championship teams.

Well, you have to admit that long-term concussion trauma is a pretty huge deal. We all love the sport dearly and that part will probably never change for any of us - but the CTE stuff is real and if you're the parent of a young man there are some decisions to be taken seriously there.

One of the hard parts is that when you're a professional you get paid to do it and you're of consenting age to sign up for that damage. But getting to that point, and the fact that hardly anybody goes pro? Kind of a difficult hurdle.
