Firing from Disney and reinstatementEdit

In July 2018, in reaction to Gunn's public criticisms of Donald Trump, pro-Trump commentator Mike Cernovich drew attention to tweets that Gunn wrote between 2008 and 2012, joking about topics like rape, 9/11, child abuse, and pedophilia.[46]

Dang. That's some textbook cancel culture.

And it's not difficult to see why Disney wouldn't want Gunn's 2009 tweets associated with their brand, and took action against him. No brand wants to be associated with that.

Recency, as you pointed out, may have played a part. But it appears that Gunn held the exact same (early version of Q possibly?) views as Carano.

They hired him back, after an apology. If that is the standard, it would seem that Disney would give Carano a chance to apologize, rather than firing her.

Or perhaps, the issue is that one was anti-Trump and one was pro-Trump...

It is funny that numerous other Hollywood types came to Gunn's defense, which probably influenced Disney's decision to bring him back into the fold. So they must be okay with the content of the tweets...wonder if they will do the same for Carano?

If that were the only case, it would be logical enough to explain their actions. No one wants to be associated with the guy who fomented the attack on the Capitol.

We're up to, what? Three Capitol Police Officer deaths now? One by trump's mob and two by suicide after?

Yep, and this happens far too often, people expect it to happen, and are unfortunately de-sensitized to it.

And for all those who are fine with Gina Carano getting canned, just remember Disney decided James Gunn wasn’t enough of an a$$h@!e/douchbag/despicable human that they brought him back. Apparently to Disney, being an awful scum of a human being isn’t as bad as writing a few twitter posts that have questionable taste.

Gunn's posts happened years ago, before he was hired by Disney, and he has repeatedly apologized and made amends for those (which, if you couldn't tell, were joking in nature, no matter how poor in taste they were).

You're way, way off base with this comparison.

FWIW, I think cancel culture has a lot more to do with social media and the times we live in than it does any particular political ideology. I suppose it depends on a person's political persuasion whether they like or hate it in any specific case.

If you say or post anything remotely questionable, somebody somewhere is going to take offense and do whatever in their power to make you pay for it.  Unfortunately, it is what it is and that Genie is not going back in the bottle. I don't see much sense in trying to take sides on it or assign blame left or right. Welcome to our F'd up world.

So Kaepernic is there? With Tommie Smith, John Carlos, Kathy Griffith, The Dixie Chicks, Goodyear, the NFL, etc, etc.
