Also maybe we refrain from calling the kid a loser. What he did was abhorrent but part of the reason this situation even happened was due to excessive bullying. Not to say that is an excuse but it is a factor. Just don't see what good it does to continue on with that when it is likely part of the reason this person broke in the first place.

I believe the party line is to mutter something about Jeebus and possibly make mention of more mental health services (that they have no intention of funding) whenever there’s another public shooting.

Hard to hold the party line with something like this because there is no pretty bow to tie it up with. No simple explanation or easy conversation as to why this happened. There are few straws to grasp at so it takes some time to grab onto the one that can be used to make it the other sides fault.

I wasn't around back them but the internet and social media definitely is a double edged sword in situations like this.

Did I hear old fart :o :dunno    Well I was in 2nd grade at the time - Miss Hemphill's class (she also taught my mom by the way at a one room country school(fortunately for me that one room school was no more)- notice the 'miss' and not the MRS - gives you an idea about her -- buttttt I digress) and I remember her running into class crying shortly after lunch.  Not crying quietly either.  I then remember watching Walter Cronkite on our graining black and white TV.  I also remember Lee Harvey Oswald getting shot on TV and Dad yelling in disbelief when that occurred- and finally I remember the funeral procession on TV.   More vividly, 6 years later I remember Bobby Kennedy being shot. The next morning I had Sister School (nuns- Summer week class) and the nuns crying.  Bobby was the guy I was pulling for - even as 8th grader I was pretty aware.  Of course MLKJr being shot a couple of months before that was terrible.  1968 was one hugely, ugly, terrible year full of riots, assassinations, the TET offensive in Vietnam, Dem Convention turmoil, president not running, poor economy, etc.  1968 is easily one of the top 5 worst years that I have lived through as an American.

For sure.  I don't know how some of these guys do it -  I think it is a bot farm for some are on this thread and you see their posts on another thread and another  - they are everywhere.  Looking at you @teachercd  Or maybe they are just fast  :dunno

JFK was 4 years before I was born and 1 when Bobby was shot. Some of my earliest memories were my parents watching the end of the Vietnam war on tv (with just three Chanel’s and I was the remote). 
 

What I remember even more though was the culture…..even though I was so young. There was horrible turmoil, but the strongest force back then was the hippies and peaceniks and protests.  Think about what they were mostly about. Peace love and drugs!!!  Yes, the drugs were negative. But their message was good. Treat each other with kindness.  And the music was awesome. 
 

Contrast that with now and the driving force in America is just about the opposite. 
 

Both eras had their conspiracy theorists. They just spread faster now. 
 

Its amazing how young I was and how much that era affected me.
