The Democrat Utopia

If/When tips go tax free, that is when I’ll quit tipping completely. So I’m good either way.

Good servers in decent/better restaurants make a killing on tips. And the whole tipping deal has gotten way out of control. How about their employers pay them what they’re worth and reflect that in menu prices and leave it at that? Too simple.

I’ve always assumed at a sushi restaurant they would want to keep doing tips, although they probably have to share with the sushi chefs. Not sure how it works I just know it costs a lot and the tips are high.

A sushi restaurant is the perfect example of why tipping shouldn’t be needed. A skilled sushi chef (as well as servers) should be in demand and a high paying job. The restaurant that pays them what they’re worth should benefit from increased sales, volume and prices. It just shouldn’t be a thing where the customer needs to slap another 20% +\- on top of the bill. Charge me what you need to and pay your people what you need to. If it’s good enough, I’ll keep coming back.  If the food or service isn’t good, I’ll go elsewhere. #sickoftipping

I just don’t get the idea of no tax on tips.   Why not?   The dishwasher at the restaurant getting paid $15 an hour has his/her income taxed.   Why is income from tips supposed to be tax free.    And like you, I will protest by not tipping anymore

I’m sick and tired of it too. But, until restaurant owners change how they pay, I’ll keep tipping well. People who serve me well, deserve to be paid.

It’s just unfortunate that the US has gone so far in this direction.

I wonder what would happen if you started a hood restaurant paying a decent wage, with a sign on the menu that says, “Our severs are paid living wage.  They appreciate a tip. However, don’t feel that it is expected”.

I’m not so sure that isn’t already a thing at some restaurants. None I know of around here but I think I’ve seen that approach advertised in Fort Collins.

I just think it’s ridiculous that some restaurant workers can be so severely underpaid and expected to make ends meet with tips. That isn’t how our economy is supposed to work.

And to be clear, I don’t classify fast food places as restaurants. I think fast food places should be lower paying jobs than decent restaurants. Kids/teens and people not supporting a family need jobs too. Minimum wage is fine for that and nobody should be working for less than minimum wage. I’ve never understood why food service workers should be treated differently than any other industry. Employers get what they pay for and so do customers. If the business model doesn’t work then see ya.

Pretty sure the majority of people who are tipped don't report the majority of it anyway, especially if it's cash.
No s#!t!  This is what I was thinking.  NO ONE reports their tips

Also, anyone mowing a lawn, baby sitting, nannies, washing trash cans, power washing driveways, QB lessons, BB lessons, Tennis lessons, Golf lessons...NO ONE REPORTS THIS s#!t!

I made over 5K a year for BB and FB camps, never paid a dime in taxes.

You magnificent SOB!  That is what I have been saying over and over.

Most of my students come from RICH a$$ families...yet I still hear "I will never work a PT job for less than 18 dollars an hour"

The really good bartenders and waiters are never going to be in favor of moving to a living wage. They can make an absolute killing in tips. Like $70k a year, or even more depending on the city.
