The Religious Discussion of 2012

Why would it be disrespectful to a genderless god? Or, more specifically, why would it be more disrespectful than calling God "He" or "Him?"

Isn't referring to God by male pronouns simply repeating dogmatically the tenets of a religion you were taught?

Probably. Everyone refers to God as the father.

I suspect that's so bronze-age man could relate to him. Introducing the concept of a genderless god is much harder than a god that follows known parameters.

OK lets play that game. And why its BS and does not work in a secular nation, which we are.

1 - Thou shall have no other gods before me. Time to burn down all the non-Christian worship centers and kill or convert all non-believers?

2 - Thou shall not take the lord's name in vain. Well, throw out the first amendment.

3 - Keep the Sabath Holy. Labor for six days and give God the Seventh. Damned near every retail chain breaks this one, and so does almost every single person in this country when they shop on a Sunday.

4 - Honor thy father and thy mother. Do we start making laws on how people deal with relitives?

5 - Thou shall not murder. Kinda one of those underpinnings of a society, and why people formed into groups in the first place.

6 - Thou shall not commit adultery. Good grounds for divorce, but not for sending someone to prison, or a good old fashion stoning.

7 - Thou shall not steal. Again, one of those underpinnings.

8 - Thou shall not bear false witness. The only place that is criminal is while under oath. Otherwise your its civil court at best.

9 - Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife. Thought crimes.

10 - Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's goods. More thought crimes, better not want to do better in life and be able to get nicer things...

Two of 'God's Laws' are real laws. Two. Some of the others are good advice. But not fit for law.

Because of patriarchal societies. The Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures tended to treat women as little more than property for the majority of thier history. So there is no way in hell they were going to have a female as the ultimate power in the universe, it would kinda be hypocritical of them. Polythiests tend to have a female as the creator of life, and the Native Americans generally revered a Mother Earth.

Your suggestion for the 1st amendment is unreasonable, first of all. Second, the rest of the commandments are not things that a nation could create laws about; they are simply sins. God didn't intend the commandments to be enforced by law (although some were at one point in time), but rather He wants people to have the freedom of choice and make their own decisions. That's the beauty and grace of God.

And your interpretation of the 10th commandment is a little amuzing to be honest. Just because you may be striving to be as good as you can be doesn't necessarily mean that you are being envious of your neighbor. It just means that you are striving to be the best person you can and achieve success. I don't think there would be a commandment--or anything mandated by God for that matter--that would discourage high achievement.
