@Thanks_Tom RR my wife always just says, great job putting in a ton of extra work, as your reward we've got even more work for you.

    I appreciate it though.

Now it's time to put your mouth where your money is

Writing grants in an unsupportive academic environment is the most soul sucking thing I've ever done.

@teachercd As a young professor, tenure is like strapping a time-bomb on your chest. You have 5 years to prove to the university you have a stable, productive, and independently-funded research program with the added charges of service and teaching expectations. The dream of becoming an old professor is secondary to the hope you can keep your job following your tenure review.

"Strapping a bomb to your chest!  Haha!  I bet it is!  I thought it was 7 years though, but still...it is amazing that the system is set up in such a "good ole boy" way...

Basically you are getting hazed for 5 years (or less!) and then once you are "in" you are pretty protected (right?).

My buddy is a Prof at PSU now...his last stop before that was in New Zealand.

The difference between pre-tenured and tenured status is that colleges can choose to not renew the contract and terminate a professor without cause or reason during the probationary, pre-tenured period. The university has to demonstrate incompetence or unprofessional conduct before firing a tenured professor. So, tenure provides some job security, but it does not make you bullet-proof. You still get evaluated for promotions and raises; you just get the right to be fired with cause.

Given the comment about having a close knit team and the fact that I do research on developing connection between people, I'm trying to a way to get the team to let me work with them. Odds of it happening are almost zero, but it would be pretty dang awesome.

You could probably make a career out of studying this year's team.

It's true. I'm actually working with the AD at my current university to see if we can do this with the teams here. I'm hoping that I can get a little momentum behind the application of this stuff to sports.

Do you follow Brett McCabe? Go work for him. His podcasts are very, very good.

Off to Indiana for a very cold football game.

Almost decided to make the trek, but Nebraska is 0-2 in games I've attended this year. That, and the Vikings are in KC this weekend....Can't miss that.

Does anyone know where to buy a lil' red Halloween costume?

I should be clear, one of the priorities is a mask with the soulless eyes.

edit: nevermind, the link wont work and looked horrible.

Grant application in. Way too much work for such a small one.

What's worse is when you get the grant and then realize you said you'd do way too much stuff for such a small amount of money.

If status updates are going away, it would seem I'm going to have to start posting in threads. See you all on the flip side.

Just put in my notice at my job a month in advance. Told by my boss that I should have trusted them more and told them sooner. Also told by my boss I might lose my benefits because I'm only part time during the summer. Take home message: Don't notify employer in advance that you're leaving, just stop showing up. What BS.

@Huskerzoo Yeah, moving around in academic jobs can be tough on any relationship between you and more senior members of the department you are leaving. One reason is because filling a open faculty line can be a 1-2 yr prospect for the department. Honestly, you got to do what is best for you.

As far as when you should tell your chair you are on the market, you got to read your own situation. It does not always pay to tell your chair you are leaving early in the process because I have heard stories about chairs trying to sandbag your candidacy. On the other hand, I have heard riffs can form between you and your former colleagues if you wait too late or leave under uncertain terms.

Moving past all of these generalities and worst case scenarios, from what I know about your situation, you are making a good move. It is hard living apart for a spouse, so getting appointments at the same university is awesome.

Employees are supposed to give employers advance notice, but how often do employers give advance notice that they're cutting an employee loose?

Moving around in education sucks...It is almost like they try to shame you for leaving or wanting to leave.

    Off-season posts or a colonoscopy?

I'll take the colonoscopy. At least you're unconscious for that

Leaning towards the colonoscopy.  Too many pissy attitude cowards during offseason.  Same really during season but at least there are games to distract me from getting annoyed by it.

If possible...see if the basement has a deep well...it can come in handy.  My last neighbor, Buffalo Bill, he had one, raved about it!

If you live in a northern climate that gets snow, its best to have a south facing driveway (or at least not a north facing driveway).

Avoid homes with backyards against a main road. Unless you can handle that constant noise

Did the seemingly impossible. Wife and I offered tenure track positions in the same department. Chair of the department is also a husker fan. Life is good.
