I'm sure the rule was originally adopted to discourage taunting but why would this be considered taunting?

You can't make any gestures in the competition area. That's what got them disqualified.

Also, supposedly he cupped a hand to his ear and pointed skyward. Assuming that is correct, I'm willing to bet if he hadn't cupped his hand to his ear (a gesture we all know is commonly associated with celebration and/or taunting) they wouldn't have been DQ'd.

Dumb rule and dumb ruling.
