i agree that is shady af, but is it against the rules?

No. Just because we refuse to cut dead weight doesn't mean doing so is illegal or shady at all. Academic scholarships require students to perform once they get to college, athletic ones should be the same. #guy #vestal #ashburn #okeyumi

This just makes me hate Alabama that much more. KJ, what qualifies as dead weight? Someone who is good enough to start on most D-1 rosters but not good enough to start at Alabama; are they "dead weight"?

Jesus KJ. Really? "doesnt mean doing so is illegal OR shady......". Give me a break. It may not be illegal doesnt mean it's not shady, and frankly, makes Nick Saban a total prick.

it is definitely dishonest. but in kj's defense, if you commit to 'bama, you should know what you are getting into.

I agree with KJ. Sucks for those kids, but is within the rules. In addition, I'm sure that at least some of the kids that get cut are either loafing, missing workouts, etc. Wish there was more discretion to cut kids who aren't putting in the effort without the backlash.

Eventually something has to be done to control things like this. 4 year scholarships are the first step IMO

What is deadweight? For example, with Kentucky's last few basketball classes, they have had to CUT starters and significant contributors who chose to come back to school. They aren't dead weight, they're coach is just an a-hole.

It's a dooshbag move plain and simple. You recruited the-what was a kid at the time-and all but begged him to come play for you, and now youre gonna kick him to the curb and put his future and education in sever jeapordy becuase you found someone better, or becuase he "didnt pan out" ? f#*k that. Like I said, I'll take 4 losses a year for the rest of my life if it means i know we're taking care of these guys while theyre here and after. Cutting the dead weight? f#*k t...

So when an engineering student with a 3.4 GPA gets their scholarship cut and given to a freshmen who got a 36 on their ACT's, is that bullsh#t too? Because that happens every day and I don't see anyone whining about that poor unfortunate 3.4 kid. Time to grow up and realize the world isn't going to give you things just for showing up.

@KJ: I've never heard of anything like that. I would say it must be an SEC thing, but everyone knows that there's no such thing as any SEC student capable of having a 3.4 GPA or a 36 on their ACT's.

That's a way different situation. The student on academic scholarship has nobody to blame but themselves if they lose their scholly. They know the requirements to keep their scholarship (certain GPA every semester, etc.) They are not at risk of losing it to another student like an athlete is.

No sh#t. You dont lose a scholly just cuz someone else is simple better. You lose because you lose it. You dont hold up to your end. Now, whether or not that pertains to this athletic topic, I guess i'm not sure. In a way it does, but yet, it doesnt. There's many factors out of the control of the player that pertain to whether or not he/she pans out. In the case of that student, there isnt. It's up to him/her and him/her alone to meet the minimum to hold on to that scholly...

KJ.
KJ.
"Panning out" and "meeting the minimum" is relative. If you're capable of doing 4 star work and they have the ability to bring in someone who can do it at a 5 star level, you're no longer doing the minimum necessary to keep your job.

Big difference though. The football coach offered that player the scholly and begged him to come here. The student applied and earned it. Hence, the coach is a hell of a lot more obligated to keep his end of the deal, especially after they sit in a livingroom multiple times and tell parents how much they love their son and how much theyre going to take care of them and how much a doosh coach x from team y is. This is ridiculous and is essentially comparing apples to asparagus.
