Thats probably true. I just think adding steps to solve a simple equation seems to be pointless if the kids are still struggling with reading comprehension, spelling etc. Apparantely we don't teach cursive anymore either?
Kids who struggle in Math usually grasp the other techniques which common core teaches way better than a standard algorithm. I have taught math for about 10 years and it seems that my students have a deeper understanding of math now instead of the ol skill and drill.
I'm all for accountability, but with my twins just entering 1st grade this year. The expectations of them at 6 years old is ridiculous and never mind the stuff I was going over with one of them makes no sense to him. He gets the basic 5+3=8, no problem, but moving these dots from this side to this other side then adding other dots screws with him big time.
I don't understand why they force feed it down every kid. If a kid gets it the "old" way, then don't muddy up the understanding. If common core is helpful for others, then apply it to those kids. I watched a 3min video last night and the narrator talks about one method doesn't fit all, if so, then take your own advice and don't force confusing methods on the other kids.
