No. Your can always be honest and have hope. They're not mutually exclusive. Anything can happen over the course of a season. If you're coaching you should be honest with yourself, but you only tell the team what they need to hear to improve everyday and push themselves.

Coach, your team knows long before you do if they are good/bad/sucktastic.

Does it mean you have to tell them they suck? Of course not, just make little goals for games and practices where they can see results.

If they are already really good...just don't get in the way.
