I didn't agree with Gifford's targeting, but I also wasn't surprised that it stood, I don't think it was a dirty hit. I also don't think the hit on Hunter Jr was malicious either, and was glad that wasn't called. The DB was leading with his shoulder and Hunter had left his feet changing the plane of where his head would be. The problem I have is with lack of uniformity in applying the rule throughout college football and how a form tackle like Gifford's is an eject...

...ejection but the UT DB launching and knocking a player out of the game isn't.

In most sports there is a warning or a universal understanding for behavior/actions that lead to an ejection. In targeting, it's so subjective the rule isn't applied across the board and players tend to not even know what they could do different given the same situation in the future.

Zero uniformity. The officials do not have a consistent understanding of the call. The hit on Hunter was dangerous and should be penalized.

The NCAA needs to take over ref assignment duties, and stop it with conference-based ref teams.
