Do a ton of research on any potential new state if you decide to move, BRI. This kind of thing is a Republican party plank, and they have full control of 25 state legislatures and a majority in 44 of them. Nebraska's Unicameral is technically bipartisan but that's changed this year.
I would hate to see you uproot yourself only to find out you're in the same position in your new home.
I'll do a bunch of research before I leave for sure. I really can't bargain for my benefits at this point since I'm a supervisor, but they are talking about making retirement changes to our state pension as well and that worries me even more. They say police and fire are exempt from these union changes, but I'm not naive enough to think it won't get us at some point if it does change. It opens the door and that's enough. I for the life of me can't figure out why th...
they are changing things that don't save money for tax payers. It just screws over the middle class workers and will have one helluva effect on the level of education and service some receive in this state. SMH
I think there is a misconception we don't pay for benefits and our pensions are "given" to us. Obviously that's not true and our current state run pension is very successful and almost completely self funded.
Exactly, it's a mess down there and we don't need that here. For some of us the only reason we keep doing these public service jobs is because of our pensions and the protections in place.
My wife is a social worker and this will be affecting her as well. She'll only get 1 raise a year rather than 3, medical won't be as cheap anymore and could lose her retirement. If things go south she'll quit and open up her own day care which I'm ok with
Had to comment on the "only one raise per year" comment. Don't get me wrong Delwiz, I'm sorry a good thing may be going away for you and your wife but expecting more than one raise (or even one) per year.....I can't quite comprehend that. IMO, if it was 3 per year, no wonder something needs to change. And everybody's medical is getting more costly. IDK...welcome to the real world?
Fireman and police are exempt at this point, but we know in the future we'll be included. and El Diaco the public employees make less than private employees so thinking we pay less for benefits while making the same if not more money just isn't correct.
BRI- I was making no presumptions about how much private or public workers make. Simply commenting that 3 raises per year is not something I have seen in my lifetime and probably shouldn't be something anyone expects to happen. My wife had a local government job for many years and it seemed most of the time there was a wage freeze in effect. Occasionally they would get a cost of living and a merit based raise in the sam year but we sure never planned on either happening.
