Think of it as taking a square and slowly squishing it. The area inside keeps getting smaller and smaller until it is eventually gone. A 5 x 5 square would turn in to a 4 x 6 and then a 3 x 7 and so on.
It’s really simple. 3.5x3.5=12.25 whereas 3x4=12. Not sure why it should seem any different. But seriously, why in meters?
