@Cdog923 Just subscribed myself.... Mitch is good, but I'd be curious how much money Dirk turned down. He's far and away the best story teller in our local media, and would of been a great fit for what The Athletic does.
@B.B. Hemingway Mitch and Dirk have 2 different jobs. Mitch is a reporter while Dirk is a writer/story-teller. I'm not saying The Athletic doesn't have a place for someone like Dirk, but for a Nebraska beat reporter, Mitch is a much better guy.
@B.B. Hemingway Dirk was my first thought for who would jump ship, but @ColoradoHusk is right: Dirk is much more suited for a long form style. He would thrive at someplace like Sports Illustrated.
@spurs1990 What?! I signed up for 3.49/month a couple hours ago. I thought 30% off was the deal!
@ColoradoHusk Yeah, you're probably right. Mitch's job will be more "beat". A lot of the Athletic's work seemed like it was "story telling", from what I had seen.
@B.B. Hemingway I read Mitch's first article for The Athletic and it was more of a personal piece on Adrian. It will be interesting to see how much of his writing is typical beat writer stuff, and how much of it is more long-form, personal stories/opinion pieces. Either way, good to see Mitch take this step in his career.
@Cdog923 Yeah. I bet he was still one of their first calls. Mitch must have been down the list a little since he didn't take it last season (I guess his ESPN contract could of been an issue too).
Edit: I think that takes you to my account.. Nevermind. Might be for people who had subscribed previously. I had done the free trial before then cancelled waiting until they did a bit more with Nebraska. They sent the deal to my email with the hour countdowns. I think the deal is tied to my email..
They do have 40% and 50% emails come out like every week though it seems so I wouldn't settle for 30%. Granted the difference between those is pretty minimal.
So, with the plethora of of Husker-related options, why The Athletic? I like Sherman. I think he's probably one of the best sportswriters to have covered the program in the last couple of decades, but seems like you get way more bang from your buck with one of the online services or LJS/OWH, don't you? I mean, is it $3.49 for just one guy covering Husker stuff? I'm sure you get access to more Athletic content and maybe that's worth it. But, just for Husker coverage, doesn't seem like that worthwhile of a deal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sherman I like your writing a bunch so don't be hurt if you see this.
