It is their creative property and they can do with it what they want.  If you don't like the movie, don't go see it.

Saw a post that the original fairy tale Ariel was green and not very nice.

Personally, I like counter casting to an extent that it doesn't destroy the plot.  Put Willie Loman in a wheel chair, but not Gayle Sayers.

The only question I am legitimate curious about, will this change the “look” of Ariel at the Disney theme parks. People can do whatever they want, don’t care who they cast, obviously it’s an agenda that’s being pushed, but just curious if this change reflects their parks too.

@Savage Husker  how is it an agenda that's being pushed? After this movie, the overwhelming majority of Disney leads will still be White. Having a Black actress playing Ariel in the remake of a Disney cartoon about mermaids doesn't require an agenda.

C’mon @Moiraine, you’re not this naive and people aren’t stupid to see through this. This doesn’t raise the needle and I really don’t care who they cast, outside of my curiosity stated above, but take it for face value.

I'm upset that they are remaking a movie, probably word for word and scene for scene, and expect people to pay money to see it.  If people are sucker enough to pay theater prices to watch "The Little Mermaid" again like it is something new, they are sucker enough to watch no matter what color they make her....

@Savage Husker   I'm sorry, but casting the best actor for the live action version of a character from a cartoon, who happens to be a different "race" (not sure if that's actually the case since she was a mermaid) does not require one to have an "agenda." Also, that word gets thrown around to damn much. Ya, their agenda was to have a really good singer and actress play the lead role in the movie.

I’m not coming from a place of discrediting the cast and her ability. To piggy back off of funhusker’s point, It’s Disney/Hollywood rinse and repeat with a twist. I hold the opinion it could be more unique to introduce a new Disney princess with an original story, than this. Halle Bailey is a bolder business move and I’m intrigued how it plays out because there are ripple effects to this decision. If you want to parse terminology, that’s your agenda ;)   :)

@Savage Husker  Disney is clearly on a spurt of remaking their cartoons. With no agenda at all it's reasonable for 1 of the leads to be a minority even if the original cartoon character was not, when the character is not from a specific location on earth (i.e. she's from the ocean). Whereas if the character is supposed to be from France a few centuries ago she should be White, or from Iraq I think he/she should be Arab. With Ariel you're free to just pick the best actress, no need for an agenda to do that. With Beauty and the Beast it's not realistic for the character to not be White unless they change the era of the movie. Same with Aladdin being Arab. (Although looks like they went another direction with Jasmine, not that it really matters).

@Savage Husker I think the reason you've caused debate is the fact your choice of words isn't being direct to your feelings on the subject. You are leaving a bit to the imagination. What agenda is being pushed?
