I loved the half time show and I felt like it appealed to a wide range of people even if that kind of music isn't someone's "thing," but there was a lot of reaction from people I saw that disappointed me... things I'll probably post about in P&R at some point.
As for the show itself, I feel like people suffer from memory loss when it comes to analyzing these things. The NFL has done a pretty good job of balancing generations and genres IMO. In the last few years we've had The Weeknd, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars... all performers that I think appeal to a younger crowd. Then you've got Bruce Springsteen and The Who whom played approximately a decade ago. And then a bunch of other artists that I think split the difference. Prince was probably the best half time show I've ever seen, and although I respect Prince a ton, he's not exactly an artist I'll throw on Spotify ever.
People just need to chill out. The NFL is a money making business so, although I'm sure they want to appeal to a wide range of audiences, they also want to provide artists that'll draw massive attention and interest. Mission accomplished yesterday.
Great show!! Could have done with less Eminem and 50 Cent and more Dre and Snoop. Was expecting a holograph 2 Pac at some point. This is not a typical "safe" lineup and glad they did it.
@swmohusker I liked Eminem but agree with cutting 50Cent, KL, and MJB. Snoop, Dre, Eminem and a 2Pac tribute would have been money! Would only get better if they added Ice Cube.
It's a half time show. I can understand people saying...Yeah...that was great. Or, Meh...wasn't my thing. But, the comments on line I'm seeing about how horrible it was or how the NFL finally got it right are just silly. Anytime you put up artists, someone is going to love it and some are going to not like it. But...why make such a big deal about it?
@funhusker with KL being from Compton and a legit top 5 all time rapper, I think he would’ve been a glaring omission in that city and with that lineup. The 50 cent thing was objectively the weirdest. Dude wasn’t even part of the promos.
@BigRedBuster I 100% agree. The same people who hated it this year will probably love next year’s, and vice versa. It’s not a big deal at all and I don’t think the NFL got it more right than wrong compared to any other year. It’s good that they rotate genres/generations.
Either way please fail them without remorse. Kendrick is still very much in his prime and with the exception of 50 Cent you probably had 4/5 of the greatest rappers of all time on that stage.
It sure wasn’t my cup of tea but they have a lot of other people to consider who aren’t 58 yr old rap/hip hop averse white guys. It was actually better than I expected. Eminem is really the only one I was familiar with and he played part of one of the 3 songs I know he does that I actually like, so that was good I guess. (I don’t think Shake That would get the green light  ) Historically the halftime shows are usually all hype and a let down anyway.
Even when the halftime shows were somewhat relevant to my 70 year old taste, I rarely watched them from start to finish. My sons and nieces were thrilled with Sundays halftime show however. They all said it could have been 30 minutes longer. Music is the time machine that sparks memories of events and people from our past. I'm happy those in their 30's to the 50's were entertained but sad that so many of my age feel the need to show disdain for music they don't care for.
I enjoyed Dre, Eminem and 50 cent. I’m ok with Snoop, really wished it was only Dre, Eminem, Snoop and Ice Cube. Pretty bummed there wasn’t a hologram of 2Pac. The music took me back to my youth. My dad who’s in his upper 60’s doesn’t listen to that type of genre of music started throwing his arms up. It was weird seeing my mom throw her one arm up in the up and down motion haha.
@Apathy that's awesome and glad you enjoyed it. There have been years where I felt the same way. Other years where others felt that way. It's great that they change it up for the diverse audience that they have.
