I've seen some media people pumping this up. I go to the link and all it does is ask me for my email....which I have no desire to give them. Is this really that big of a deal that the media is all excited about it?

Yup, it's a bit steep. Your best bet is to wait until their big Black Friday sale where everything is at least 20% off. They also do random 20% off sales during the year that they announce via their Twitter.
