The Athletic: Ohio State has a new QB1 and a revamped defense, but it’s still Playoff-or-bust for the Buckeyes
When you lose the championship game in the fashion Ohio State did, 52-24 to Alabama, the expectation might be for swift and aggressive reaction, for sweeping change to address whatever created that kind of gap. It’s possible Ryan Day’s mind went there in the immediate aftermath of that loss. On the other hand, it was the culmination of a surreal few months. With a shortened season and canceled games, unpredictability and a slew of unavailable players due to stringent health protocols, navigating football during a pandemic proved incredibly difficult for the Buckeyes. By that measure, it was a bit remarkable that they even reached the national title game in the first place. Perhaps Day had an appreciation for that in the moment. In the months since, he certainly hasn’t reacted like a coach who believes his program is in need of some kind of significant overhaul.

Athlon: #4 Ohio State Buckeyes Season Preview and Prediction
Whoever inherits the keys to the offense will benefit from the presence of sturdy pass protectors, weapons in all directions and an extremely QB-friendly head coach. Still, there will be pressures and competition lurking all season. Plus, the Buckeyes have some early landmines to dodge with a season-opening tester at Minnesota and a follow-up contest with Oregon. The regular-season schedule could become more manageable as key performers settle in, and it ends with a home date with Michigan State and a battle with the other School Up North. How well the Buckeyes navigate their slate and flirt with a return to the College Football Playoff will depend on the cohesion of the defense, solving the mystery of special teams and a return to offensive efficiency.
