I like pranks, as long as they're fun, they don't hurt feelings, and they make folks laugh or are entertaining.

April Fool's Day is coming up in a month. Is there any kind of fun/funny prank we could play? Suggestions:

  1. Announce that Frank has taken over HB and is changing it to an Arkansas State forum.
  2. Change the Color format to Sooner Red.
  3. Fake a press release that Nebraska officially adopts Colorado as our rival.


In the 1980s there was a classic April Fool's Day prank played by one of the local stations in Omaha when they announced that Tom Osborne was leaving Nebraska to join Barry Switzer's staff at Oklahoma. It was a one- or two-minute segment that fooled everybody. They announced it was a prank at the end of the Sports segment or at the end of the broadcast, can't remember which. I can't find anything about it on Google. Wish I could find that segment.

Any interest in this? Or would it be a disaster?

 
3 sounds fun, I could photoshop up an "official" press release from the university proclaiming that NU and CU are officially rivals, announcing a trophy, etc.

This is good stuff. I'm liking either although I don't know how to change colors. How about black and gold and COlordao symbols and stuff?

Or if this one sounds better we could do that, but I'm worried about where the press relaese would appear to come from and if that "sourse" would or could come after us. Make sense?

Set up an alternate skin and switch to it; not sure how the backend works, but we can start from duplicating the current skin under a different name. So changing the color scheme completely is within reach...it'll be the symbols (images) that will be the harder part, I think.

Exactly correct. We can create an "April Fool's" skin, set the colors to black and gold and even add a CU banner, etc. I don't know how far anyone would want to take it - different icons for the forms? Perhaps a Ralphie for that? You'd have to have two different versions - one to denote new posts and one to denote no new posts. The easy way to do that is to have a "regular" Ralphie icon, then simply use the same one but reduce the color saturation so that it looks faded.

Once we get it right, we simply set it as the default skin for everyone, and switch the default back to the huskerRed after April 1.

 
If we did the Colorado switch we could explain it by saying we did a demographic study, and since "our sources tell us" that Colorado is likely joining the Pac-10 and the site traffic would be higher from the west coast audience, we're going to follow Colorado to the P10.

I would be glad to work on verbiage and dummy up a "study" showing projected stats for usership. Charts and graphs and everything. Just let me know.

We would also need to preface this with an announcement of an upcoming "site development" a few days or a week in advance. If we just launch it all on April 1 everyone will know it's a prank right away.
