Bah. A Mess.

I'm sorting through some of the mess here and I guess I'll just run down this one because it really is a mess:

Thread: http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/61581-bos-presser/

Spin-off: http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/61586-bo-the-jerk-thread-discussion/

Two reports in the report center about this.

With no prior warnings I went ahead and gave GI56 a 2-day suspension to cool off and a warning. Very arguably he deserved a ban outright on the first go because of the stuff he said, and the problems in general he was causing. However I wanted to be careful in dealing with a situation where, despite his sh#t-stirring, he does make one good initial point: the responses to his thread, which you'll find in the Woodshed spinoff, were very unproductive, many of which borderline or past-borderline rule-breaking, and allowing that kind of stuff to stand, even in venting period, is bad for the board.

It's a huge pet peeve of mine when members start mocking or jumping on each other for no reason, especially when they gang up on somebody - FLU, etc, etc. Paul's a great guy and a good member of this board but he does this far too often. He isn't the only one. "IBTL" posts are terrible. They clog up a thread and render it useless, but then the action of locking ends up tacitly condoning all that thread-derailing stuff to begin with.

(Hence, why I moved everything to the 'shed on this one.)

Thoughts?

Also, what do we let people get away with in the 'Shed? Blatant, swear-laden personal attacks? That was what I took issue with mainly on him, although the fact that I had to move a ton of his posts in his thread from the main forum to the 'shed to start with earned the warning/suspension in my mind.

Once in the shed, though, any manner of personal attacking goes? Just want to be consistent here. I may not be doing my best tonight.

From a PM I just received from GI56:

Any chance you can unlock my account? If you look at my history, I've been an on/off poster for many years.
I didn't talk smack until discussion was moved to woodshed and then zoogies locked me out...
Did the post (I'm assuming it's the one that's set invisible) occur before or after it was moved to the Woodshed? If before, I agree with the suspension. If after, though, I would not suspend - he's allowed to sound off in the 'Shed.

He asked me as well. This is what I responded:

The suspension was earned on the merits of the entire chain of discussion that sprouted off before I moved it to the shed.

If you're going to isolate smack-talk to a reasonable level in the 'Shed, that's fine, and you're welcome to do it when two days are up. At that time, you will have ample opportunity to demonstrate that you're not here to cause problems, or go off at the board itself while advertising others. I've complete faith that you would do so.

As for discipline of other members, let us worry about that one and any other warnings or disciplinary action that needs to be taken. Thanks for your understanding.
That particular post came after, I think. But these:

Came before.

I think I may have messed this one up. I made a post in the Shed indicating his suspension. I do feel those earlier posts merited at least a warning for him. The trouble is that a lot of other members reciprocated in similar kind.

Gotcha.

Don't feel too bad - there's no way to mete out equal punishments. The best you can do is try and isolate the problem and deal with the initial cause. Thanks for handling it, Alex; it isn't easy or fun, but you did it perfectly.
