Big Red Breakfast

Defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove was the speaker at the weekly Big Red Breakfast in Omaha. Like many coaches and players this week, he didn't give up much in his answers.

One guy asked him what kind of Saturday weather he should pray for?

"Snow," Cosgrove joked.

Another guy heard offensive lineman Lydon Murtha missed practice Thursday.

"I don’t remember that," Cosgrove said. "I was down on the other end. As far as I know, he’s good to go."

Something to keep an eye on. Murtha was not spotted leaving the field after Thursday's practice.

Cosgrove stressed the need to play fast: "And I'm not talking about speed. I'm talking about being fast to the football, get 11 guys around the ball ... proper pursuit angles... People ask, 'Do we work on that?' Yes, we work on it every day. Pursuit angles. The other thing would be fast reaction…. We’ve got to play fast."

USC is coming off a bye week after a 38-10 win in the opener over Idaho. Cosgrove doesn't really see that giving the Trojans an advantage.

"Bye weeks, I don’t really care for them," Cosgrove said. "I’d rather play 14 straight."

About getting pressure on USC quarterback John David Booty, Cosgrove said: "When you study them, he looks like he could sit back there and have a cup of coffee all the time. Amazing. They protect him. Lot of slide protection, They form a wall, so it’s hard to get interior pressure. So you got to get pressure from the edge."

USC, he said, will use a lot of 7-man protection, making it difficult to get to Booty.

One guy complained to Cosgrove about Husker coach Bill Callahan running the ball too much against Wake Forest.

"Coach wants to run the football, make no mistake about it," Cosgrove said. "We want to run the football. As a defensive coach, I love that."

Concerning Wake's success at running the end-around against Nebraska, Cosgrove said: "We repped that play probably 100 times. The problem was the speed of the game and we did not respond well to the speed of the game early."

He noted the Huskers missed just three tackles against Nevada, but 12 against Wake.

Cosgrove said he likes the size Zack Bowman (6-foo-2) and Armando Murillo (6-0) bring to this year's USC contest.

"I like our match-ups," he said. "With the added size of Zack and Armando, there’s going to be some jump balls there. With the size we have I think we’ll make some plays."

Cosgrove said Tierre Green was looking "great" in coming back from a shoulder stinger suffered against Wake. About Ty Steinkuhler, he said: "It’ll be good to have Stein back this week."

And how about this? Walk-on freshman Thomas Grove of Arlington got a plug from Cosgrove as a guy with "a bright future."

He also brought up the name of freshman Latravis Washington. "(He's) working his way up right now as an outside linebacker, a pass-rush guy on third down."
