Bo to LSU?

Not a Nebraska topic exactly but of interest to Husker fans.  Bo may be in the running for the LSU DC job.

I thought the sentence in bold is pretty interesting.  It would seem to me that a coach that has gone 33-28 would have

the "power" to influence the pick of his replacement.  Typical Bo over the top feeling of self importance.

Also, I did not realize how poorly his teams have played since the FCS title game loss. He's gone 9-15 in league play.

Again, it appears he does well with the previous coaches players and then hits a brick ceiling. While Bo could win

9 games at NU, he could never get over the hump.    I hope he finds his place and perhaps that is back in a DC position.

Bo Pelini is a strong candidate for the LSU defensive coordinator position, sources tell FootballScoop on Monday.

Pelini is currently the head coach at Youngstown State, where he has gone 33-28 in five seasons. After leading the Penguins to a surprise run to the FCS title game in 2016, Pelini’s teams have failed to rise above the fray in the competitive Missouri Valley Football Conference, going a combined 9-15 in league play with no playoff appearances in their past three campaigns. YSU went 6-6 in 2019.

Prior to that, Pelini went 66-27 as the head coach at Nebraska from 2008-14.

Pelini has been LSU’s defensive coordinator before, serving in the role on Les Miles’ staff from 2005-07. His work assisting the Tigers to the 2007 national championship led him to get the Nebraska head job.

Pelini would represent a stark departure from the stoic Dave Aranda, given that he built a reputation for verbally accosting officials, his players and his own fans alike. Working under Ed Orgeron, Pelini would have to adapt to O’s player-first style of leadership that culminated in the 2019 national title.

From Pelini’s perspective, source tells FootballScoop Bo would like to have assurances that his brother Carl would become head coach at Youngstown before making this move if possible.

In addition to Pelini, sources tell FootballScoop Ed Orgeron has spoken with other candidates including Dallas Cowboys passing game coordinator (under Jason Garrett) Kris Richard. Richard, who has coached in the league the past ten years, formerly served as a grad assistant at, and played at USC (while Orgeron coached there).

Remember how Pelini's name used to come up every time a D1 head coaching job opened?  This happened for two or three years after he got canned from NU.  But he never got hired for any of those open HC jobs.  There's a reason for that.  It's because he's a hot headed jacka$$ who who has temper tantrums on the field.  That's why he got fired from Nebraska.  It wasn't because he was a bad coach.  It was because he was an embarrassment to the University.  

If Pelini could control his temper he'd make around $3,000,000 per year as an FBS head coach.  Maybe more.  He's a terrific football guy and he'd be a great head coach.  IF he could control his temper.  But he can't.  He'd be an embarrassment to any school he represented. 

Pelini would probably be a even better DC than a head coach.  As a top tier FBS defensive coordinator he'd stand to make at least $800,000 or so.  But even as a DC his on-field temper tantrum antics would be an embarrassment.  (Edit:  Well, maybe not in the SEC.)  That's why he remains the HC of Youngstown State pulling down $200,000.  He's a prisoner of his own emotions.

But dont think his temperament would be tolerated anywhere else...  His best bet is to stay put where its maintained to a degree..

 
I got to go to the YSU-Butler game last year.  Bo was in classic Bo mode that day.  It was entertaining.  A lot of YSU fans have wanted him gone ever since.

The only part of this that I would agree with is his temper being a piece of what’s held him back.  At the end of the day he’s just hot garbage as a HC and meh as a dc.  He’s lazy and unimaginative in the recruiting world so as a dc you better have some stellar recruiters around him.  As a HC he peaks with other people’s players and then continues to trend downward as more is required from his recruits.  Over half of the defenses worst performances came under his watch and this was at a time when the big10 was a fraction of what it is now.  He was never rumored to be going anywhere after being canned by Nebraska as a HC...a few DC which never materialized to much more than rumors.  So yes him being fit for a straight jacket 99%, lazy recruiter, an average (at best) dc, and way below avg HC don’t exactly scream “hire me”.
