Car Racing

So, thumbing through channels and stopped on the Indy 500.

I remembered that I used to get into this race as a kid. Thought it was cool.

So, is there any NASCAR fans here?  I’ve actually been to the brickyard 400 at this same track. It was fun.

But, my question is, if you’re a fan of car racing, why are you a fan of NASCAR?  I get it if your a fan from a long time ago when it truly was stock car racing and chevys, fords and dodges were actually racing. But, that is not what it is anymore.

So, if I were a race fan, I’d have to be a formula one fan. Ultimate technology to go as fast as possible.

Why would you be a fan of something else?

I used to watch a lot of NHRA back in the 70s and 80s. My aunt was married to a guy that used to race at MOKAN. I couldn't get into watching NASCAR, but I'd watch Indy cars once in a blue moon.

I've held the same Indy 500 tickets for over 34 years....(can't get to the race EVERY year because of some vexing health/issues, but re- sell in those circumstances). I've given up trying to convince people of the adrenaline rush that happens when 33 machines thunder past you a mere 15 feet away in turn 1 at 23o mph just inches apart.  UNREAL AND NEVER GETS OLD.

Since TV can't replicate the enveloping noise, speed, smell, and sensory overload, I've quit trying to convince folks (except fot the 20 or 30 friends I've taken over the years who NOW get it.) Compared to all other sporting events....it's  not even close.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes.  Got into Nascar when they started building Texas Motor Speedway mid-late 90s. It was exciting.

I became a fan of Bobby Labonte #18 car sponsored by Interstate (batteries), and it was a Pontiac.  White Green and Black car.  Awesome.  Labonte was known for Joe Gibbs Racing (Former Washing Redskins Coach).  And his older brother Terry Labonte also had success years earlier.

The Truck series is pretty cool too.

These days I like Chase Elliott, but mostly because I really just love the NAPA Auto Parts car (Chevrolet).  It's bad a$$.

Looking back, there was a time between mid 90s and about 2005 when a lot of Nascar fans in Texas would put the Nascar # decal of their fav driver - on the back window of their truck or car.

But if TMS wasn't a short drive away, or any Nascar in Texas, then I wouldn't been very interested.  Unless Nascar was in Louisiana, Oklahoma or Arkansas.

When we went to the Brickyard 400, we met Joe Gibs and Bobby Labonte. In fact, we were in their trailer listening to the preface meeting just before the drivers went to their cars. That was pretty cool.

That was the year Tony Stewart got all pissed off and made an a$$ out of himself.
