Curious double standard by Husker Nation

Some of you who have been keeping tabs on the board lately may know why I’m posting this. I had a previous username in reference to Lawrence Phillips (non-negative) and apparently a number of people were offended. On top of that, I’ve held these frustrations towards husker nation for quite some time. I'm undoubtedly going to get heat for this but I really need an explanation:

My question to Husker Nation is, because I still can’t fully grasp it, why have we completely disowned Lawrence Phillips and deemed references to him as unspeakable taboo? Yes his crimes were horrid but does that mean we have to omit him when speaking about great husker backs? I think you can make a case that he is the best running back to ever play on the college level (I believe he is). Why can we not follow the same model that sports world did to Allen Iverson? Recognizing a serious on-field/court talent, and be able to distinguish that from their horrid qualities as human beings (AI had a similar crime to LP, threw his wife out of the house naked after assaulting her). I don’t condone the off-field actions, and they both deserved whatever punishment they got, but that doesn’t undo LP’s mesmerizing moves on the field that I watched as a 5 year old.

This is a complete double standard that we can celebrate Alfonzo Dennard’s on-field accomplishments (who punched a LINCOLN POLICE OFFICER) and ignore that line on a rap sheet, but can’t do the same to LP. We can separate Niles Paul urinating in public from his plays as a husker but can’t do the same with LP. Where is the consistency? I agree that we shouldn’t lump Dennard into persona non-grata category, but for gosh sake can we take LP out of that category and readmit him into the list of great Nebraska RB’s? Thunder Collins is in prison for a MUCH more serious crime, yet we have no problem fondly recalling his pitch to Mike Stuntz against Oklahoma in 2001.

This treatment of LP by Husker Nation is befitting of someone who committed crimes of Jerry Sandusky’s nature, and LP’s don’t even come close to that. Sandusky is the one who’s football accomplishments should be ignored by PSU faithful. I may never fully grasp the sensitivity of the issue since I was a small child during the LP press controversy, but it is frustrating to see articles written by Randy York of the athletic Department, the people at LJS, and OWH routinely omit LP’s name when they write about great husker RB’s. Not to mention all of the judgment I get from husker fans when I tell them Lawrence Phillips is my favorite Nebraska player of all time.

Maybe it's because part of being a Husker "Great" is how you carry yourself off the field. The guy was a complete douche bag (I knew him in college) and was given more opportunities to change his behavior and grow up than most people get in a life time. Not ONLY in college but in the NFL as well. That is why he is omitted from many writers articles.

LOL, What and why?? Do you know Lawrence Phillips or have some emotional ties to him?
Do I know him? No. Do I have emotional ties to him? Absolutely. The cognitive years of my Husker fandom were spent watching him, so that shaped the way I view him.

All I'm saying is if we can still be cool with Alfonzo Dennard after he went Smokin Joe Frazier on a cop, we can surely still be cool with LP after pushing a girl down the stairs and threatening kids.

you should read the bold repeatedly until you understand how ridiculous that comparison truly is.

Threatening kids, really? He got in a car and tried to run them over for getting his a$$ handed to him in a pick up basketball game. Go back and learn your facts about your childhood hero..Maybe you won't put him on such a high pedestal afterwards. Oh yeah...the vehicle was stolen too.

Have to say, just judging on field performance, and only that...LP was the second best running back to wear Husker red and white. I watched many games in Memorial Stadium with both Rozier and LP, and Rozier still would get my nod as the best ever running back at Nebraska. At the same time, I do have a hard time going to far down the road immortalizing LP, because of his off field problems.

And yes, perhaps it is a double standard for me (although LP's problems were clearly recurrent, not so much for Dennard.) That's life. It ain't fair.

He was one hell of a runner though.

as a matter of fact, the way you characterized his transgressions lead me to believe you are a troll trying to make husker fans look stupid.

Tell us what your real agenda is. And we are HuskerBoard :| we sell all the good stuff at HuskerNation :)

I thought you agreed to the name change without any reservations.

I'll bring this up to the rest of the mods and admin.

We'll take it from there.

I don't think it's that much of a double standard. Telling someone Thunder Collins was your favorite Husker ever might elicit similar reactions. We've had some bad eggs who were also good players, but Lawrence Phillips embodies the extremes of both. I think that's something that most Husker fans understand. Guy was a phenomenal player, but his actions have really earned him all the disgrace he's gotten.

You shouldn't have agreed to change your name. If you like LP and that bothers people, f#*k them. People need to stop being such ridiculous pussies.

But you did agree to change your name. Oops. And if you don't get why people don't like LP, well...
