Does negative rating affect ability to start new topics?

Member sheepdogmark just PMed me to say he can't start new topics, and he thinks it's associated with his negative reputation. Any word on this?

Call me old school, but I don't necessarily like the rating of posts feature. I have seen solid members with negative rankings because some jacka$$ didn't like what he had to say. Sheepdogmark is kind of a turd in the punch bowl that is life, but I don't think he should be prevented from starting any threads.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of these ratings, either. Was it Default or Enhance or somebody had like -35 at one point over nothing. It's an easily abused feature.

That said, I agree about sheepdogmark. Dude just told me he'd been a pastor and now he's a blackjack dealer or some such thing. Pretty odd combination of jobs for a pretty odd dude.

If it IS affecting members ability to start new threads then I think it needs to be turned off or taken off completely. Granted there are many flamers our there that don't need to start threads, but the majority of the members are pretty decent and should be able to start threads. Sheepdogmark is a weird one though...............

I wonder if these things are possible:

1) Turning off the ability for ratings to affect posting/thread-starting, if it is.

2) Set a lower maximum number of rating points per post. Say, 5.

3) Lowering the number of points you can give a day? Is it 10 right now? Say, make it 5. Kind of like slashdot moderation, you get 5 points to use at a time.

4) A cap for maximum positive/negative value?

Some posts are getting ridiculous hate like -9, etc. Either way it's a bit egregious, but I don't think having the ability to + or - posts is cosmetically, a bad thing. Just something we probably don't want getting too out of hand. Anyway, these aren't recommendations, just throwing some ideas out there.

Lately I've been using my 10 votes per day to undo some ridiculous negative votes some people get. I see a lot of times where someone just gives an opinion, and it's not popular, so they get gigged for it. I vote them back up to zero, usually.

Personally I think we should keep it, negative and positive. Truly positive contributors will wash to the positive side and negative will rightly show negative. It may make people think a bit more about what the post and not just post to get the shock / bad a$$ factor. I suppose we could turn the number of daily votes down even further to like 2 or 3 so people would be very selective on how they spend them.

I forgot to mention, I have mods and admins set to 100 rating votes a day so if you guys do need to even out the playing field you have a good deal of allowance.. I can raise it even further if you feel you'd need it.
