In general, they're nice because you can drop a piece of code into any template with {parse block = "block name"}. We should just clean out some of the old ones, and maybe really have them on a backup text file somewhere.
Those links are all in the templates. This is the real nightmare of forum editing, IMO, although IPB actually has a decent system (just a bad inline editor in this version). There's just a lot, lot, lot of files. Look/Feel> Templates > Huskerboard Mobile > Global Templates > globalTemplate. It's at the bottom in the footer DIV. The dynamic link I pasted from some other template, but I forget which. It can be easily commented out and replaced with a link to the Index instead (or you could add a third button).
These are things we'd lose in a version upgrade, though.
