we would kill ourselves with penalties and fumbles (even if we recovered). too many times it would go: nothing on first down, a fumble or penalty setting up 3rd and extra long, nothing on third down. we had good rhythm this game and that helps build momentum.

That would seem to make sense, but there really isn't a very strong correlation to winning with regards to penalties. In general, expect offensive penalties to have a higher correlation than defensive penalties.
