Looking for a recommendation for an external hard drive I can store all my pictures, videos, files etc. on. 1 TB, no brand preference. Don't know much about them, just want a good reliable means of storing my data off my computer.

 
Mainly look for a good price. USB 3.0 is good to get also, especially if your computer has 3.0 connections. They are all pretty much going to be the same. A 1 TB laptop hard drive really. You will find people loyal to one brand or another, but its all pretty much the same.

 
Transfer rate means little with externals. The USB connection is usually your bottleneck. And honestly, the transfer rate means very little to non-gamers in general.

 
Transfer rate shouldnt matter to me. Just want to store my data from ghost hunts since we accumulate so much footage on every investigation. Also wedding pictures/video etc. Dont trust my computer to hold the data and not get infected or junk out.

 
Just get something that has decent reviews and USB 3.0. With USB 3.0 and a platter drive inside, the USB connection is no longer the bottleneck. Even if your computer doesn't have USB 3.0 now, it will someday, so it's worth having it on an external drive.

As for brands, there is a difference between drive brands. And there is a difference between drive models within a specific brand. That said, if you're buying an external platter drive, you very likely won't know what is inside, so it doesn't matter much. If you want to be sure you're getting the best chance at a very reliable drive, buy a drive and an external enclosure yourself. Otherwise, just get one with decent reviews and call it good.
