Fru

Hey everyone, please see the link to a thread that speaks of racism in the politics and religion area of the board. Fru posts on the subject with a video of officers involved in a scuffle with a white male. Of course he twists the video and says that it's "interesting that the cops didn't fear for their lives" making it seem like if he were minority, they would've handled it differently, and the suspect would've been killed or something. That's really reaching and Fru has a history of posting negatively towards law enforcement and I'm simply not going to put up with it and called him out on it. To me it adds nothing to the discussion and is simply trolling on his part. I could be wrong and I admit that I'm obviously sensitive to B.S. like this given my chosen profession, but I'm not going to let B.S. comments like that just go. That section of the board and the vocal minority of the folks that post drivel like that has directly lead to me spending less and less time on here. We'll see how he responds.........

It seems like he's suggesting if this were a minority fighting police that they would've just shot and killed the guy instead of fighting him. Is that how you interpreted it, BRI?

I do have a couple thoughts. First, and a full disclosure, I don't know Fru's posting habits in P&R particularly in relation to law enforcement. I think he's definitely trying to stir the pot so no debate there. But, because I don't know his posting habits and because I'm not a member of law enforcement, I perceive this as a similar tactic to what many people do here regardless of topic. Post a tweet/article, make a vaguely snide remark concerning a certain subset of people and then watch the firestorm ensue. It happens with guns, different political parties, etc. I can certainly sympathize why this one would rub you the wrong way and I'm proud you took the opportunity to call him out on it.

Second, I can relate to some degree about the emotions you're feeling. As a former member of the media, I'm usually quick to jump on any criticism I think is B.S. or a narrative that I believe is simply unrealistic about journalists. I'm particularly sensitive to those suggesting the death of a journalist is a good thing. I would say the kind of vitriol and assumptions law enforcement has to deal with is worse, though.

Lastly, and in regards to the trolling, I would go back to my first point. I think what he's doing is done across P&R with different topics on a regular basis. Reprimanding him would set a tough standard I think; but, again, I don't know his regular posting habits. Somebody like Ric Flair is always posting nonsense to troll and it's easy to pick up on. I have no reference point with Fru so I will have to defer to better minds.

That's exactly how I took it. Glad I'm not the only one regardless on whether anything should be done about it or not. That part of the board goes largely unchecked IMO because it becomes a dumpster fire from time-to-time.

The toughest part about P&R to me has always been precedent. People take action there so personally, which does make moderate sense given the general nature of some discussions. Plus, a certain type of posting strategy that would go relatively ignored in the football forum often sends a different message in P&R. I think these have as much to do with anything as to why things get so unruly in there at times.

Fru’s comments are way off base, and I can see why you are offended BRI. I agree it is difficult to decide if this is where to set a precedent of restricting expression of an opinion.

Appreciate someone else seeing that, that helps me not feel like such a thin skinned pansy!

Seriously though, I'm all for criticizing us when it's appropriate, but that was just a way off base comment.

Just an FYI, Fru has requested his account be deleted. I told him I'd get to it in the next day or two in case he changed his mind.

Sorry, he had sent me the same PM a couple of days ago but I hadn't gotten to it yet.

I can work on that this evening if that's enough time.

He confirmed he'd like his account deleted. I'd like to try it (first time I've done it).

I see where to do it, but it asks if I want to delete, hide, or leave his content. Any preferences?

By default, I'm kind of inclined to keep it... not really sure what would happen to other people's content in the past that quoted it for example... if it would have them quoting an empty box or what. And having the history could be useful for people searching topics in the future.

Yeah, that's always been my worry about deleting accounts: would it leave holes in threads.  Maybe it doesn't really matter if they haven't been very active lately.

If there is an option to leave it, I would think that would be the way to go (most of the time).
