Gotta tell this to someone

I don't like to talk about my family online - privacy and security and all that - so if you would, please keep this here in this forum.

I have a little girl, Maddie, seven years old and the one treasure of my life. She goes to summer camp at her school, a school here in Lincoln. She comes home today all excited to tell me that today she met a boy named Prince. Can you believe that, Daddy? His name is Prince! I was a little skeptical, but then she showed me this little piece of Husker stationary, signed by Prince Amukamara, Eric Hagg and Roy Helu, and some other guys whose names I can't make out (they signed a LOT of these in a short time, apparently).

Maddie was very impressed with these young men, and told me they were very nice, and they had a lot of fun with the kids.

It's nice to hear stuff like this about the team, that we have some real quality kids who take time to make sure little children enjoy meeting them, especially when we see so many stories of football players doing the wrong things.

You know, that's the kind of thing you might want to write to Dr. Tom about. I'll bet they love hearing about that, and they probably will pass it on to the players - reinforcing the good behavior.

That is awesome! :woo I am going to start a grown men football camp where guys can meet players like this and go home and tell our girls! I think is so cool Lance, but it's not fair! :thumbs

Great things to hear about our Huskers. I think Coach definitely pushes all the players to be their best on and off the field.

Does she want to sell that piece of paper?  j/k That's really cool to hear that our players are willing to do that. Makes me proud to be a Husker......... :thumbs

I finally got around to emailing Bo about this. I was reminded to because Maddie is still talking about how nice the guys were, and she still thinks it's funny that Prince is named Prince - she's big into the whole Princess thing nowadays.

Anyway, I emailed Bo's secretary and got this in response:

Thank you, Lance. I will be sure to let Prince, Eric, and Roy’s parents know. It is always nice to hear good news about our players. Thank you for taking your time to write.
I wrote back to tell Bo that while he's sending notes to parents he might also send notes to the folks of Zac Lee, Andrew Green, Rex Burkhead, Alex Henery and Khiry Cooper - all of whom I've met around town, and all of whom were great, friendly guys.

That's really terrific. Man, am I jealous. You're gonna have to teach me this 'bump into Huskers everywhere you turn' skill if I ever live in Lincoln, although that's probably doubtful.

I wish I knew! I've lived in Lincoln for 22 years and very rarely ran into any Husker athletes. In the last 18 months to two years, I've seen one just about every month. There was a stretch of two or three months last season where I saw Bo out and about every couple of weeks, and the players - they just show up.

It's like reverse stalking, because each time I've already been at the coffee shop, or the sandwich shop, or the bagel shop, or the grocery store, and they come in. Maybe I'm famous for being such a windbag on HuskerBoard that they all want to meet me?

OK, with this I am done bothering Bo. I sent him this:

Coach,
I could add some more names to your list. I've bumped into several kids over the past several months at various coach-approved places across town.

My family and I have run into Zac Lee twice; the first time was the day after the Oklahoma game and once more sometime in the Spring. Both times Zac went out of his way to talk to us after I greeted him.

I have also run into Andrew Green and Rex Burkhead, both very nice young men and very friendly, and Khiry Cooper, another nice, very friendly young man. I also met Alex Henery at a grocery store and said "thanks" and shook his hand - it'd been more than a year, but that was still one heck of a kick against Colorado.

I had a chance to chat with all of these guys, and I think they're all gentlemen and a credit to your program.

Sorry to make you send so many notes to so many parents, but by chance I've run into a number of your players and each of them has been the kind of guy I'd want to wear Husker Red.

Thanks, and have a great Fall Camp,

Lance
He responded:

This is great information! Thank you again, Lance. These players and parents should know how their actions (and their son’s actions) impact others.
Thanks again! And GO BIG RED!

Why is it when you get older you get more emotional? Thanks Lance, now I'm homesick, sad, happy and proud all at the same time. :)

GBR
