Husker football-related short story. Please skip if it’s not your thing...

Husker girl keeps looking for love. She’s now been married four times since 1998. She’s still wondering about love.

In 1998 she married a guy she had known for a long time. She wasn’t wild about him but everybody knew how long they’d gone together and figured they should get married. So she said yes. Turns out he was an OK guy but he just didn’t rock her boat. So she wanted a change.

In 2004 she married a more exciting-looking guy. He’d just come from a successful job and he caught her eye. He was a big change from her first marriage so she thought this one might work. But this one didn’t either. And a lot of the neighbors didn’t like that she married him at all. He was just too different. And this couple didn’t work out either.

So, she started thinking about where to look next. She knew a guy she had dated briefly but he had moved away. She looked him up and asked if he was coming back to her town. He said he would if they got together, so they married in 2008. But this guy had a big temper and yelled at her. She wasn’t used to that but she put up with it. But after a while she had enough and that was that. She’s always been a more quiet and reserved type of person and this was never going to work long-term. Thus came the end of marriage number three.

At this point, she wasn’t sure what to look for. She started looking at guys in other towns again and a lot of the ones she liked were already taken. But she located a nice guy who was kind of average but after the last guy she was ready for a quieter guy again. They married in 2015. She knows how bad it looks that she’s missed out three times in love and she really wants this one to work. She’s still with him. The jury is out on whether she’s going to last with this guy. He’s still nice but their relationship hasn’t been as successful as she hoped. Some of the old doubts are creeping up again. And some of her neighbors are telling her to get out again.

So, we watch and wait to see what happens next to Husker Girl. Regardless of what happens to her relationship now, she knows just how many people care about her and want the best for her. In fact, she’s amazed at how wonderful her friends and neighbors are and how they’ve stood by her all these years. These are unique people who have supported and cared about her family for generations. She doesn’t want to let them, or herself, down.

Good luck, Husker Girl. One way or the other, hope you finally find all the love you’ve been missing.

So lovely that when we want to express the ridiculousness of something, we use the 'helpless woman making bad decisions while yearning for the safety of a man's love' metaphor. Are you very proud of this literary accomplishment?

You know, way back before her first husband ,Frank, there should have been a shotgun wedding after Charlie got her pregnant.
