Hyperlinks in the status updates

I noticed several members are savvy enough to figure out how to add a hyperlink in their status updates. I have tried to do this at times, unsuccessfully. What is the trick?

You just post the link, but in the status update it will not shorten. Doesn't work in comments, also.

Here's a youtube url that just shows up as a clickable link: Savage Husker status (I think this is what you mean.)

Here's a youtube url that just shows up as text: B.B. Hemingway (a couple comments down; just shows up as text--not clickable link)

Not sure why they are different.

I also tried posting an abbreviated link in a status (like this: LINK). But that doesn't work either.
