A lot of those could be said for any rural states.

anyways not to be too much of a nerd but Austin is named after Stephen F. Austin who the mexican government contracted land in 1840ish with him who in turn sold it to other frontiers men in early Texas.

Texas had to basically beg to enter the union for more than twenty years but no politican wanted to bring up the slavery outside of the Louisiana Purchase (solved by Missouri Compromise) debate, Andrew Jackson went out on a limb and said that he recognized Texas as its own republic as his last act as president, But president John Tyler asked Congress to consider an annex as his last act in 1844 and three months later Texas was in the union

Also another quick fact would be that at first Texas claimed the area of present day: New Mexico, Arizona and I believe part of Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma but dont quote me on that
