Let's add Mods - 2017 ed.

Hey guys,

A couple of announcements coming your way. Partially due to personnel losses which we have ...sustained (we miss you, Frank), I've asked Chad and he agrees it's time to add a couple more to the mods team for this season. Even the load for everyone, and inject some fresh blood for all of us to feed off of, I mean, welcome.

I don't remember how this was done in the past, but here's my proposal:

  • 2-4 new faces
  • Discuss/nominate here
  • We'll assign one current mod to reach out and recruit each one.

Criteria (please add/comment): active, conscientious, consistently respectful and cool-headed posters who don't have disciplinary history to be concerned about. Being a mod puts a target on one's back and it's best for everyone if they're the kind who can handle some heat with aplomb. These are the best traits of everyone already here. I'll yield the floor to suggestions.

Thanks!

As a second, no less important announcement: Mavric & saunders45 have graciously agreed to become Admins. We need to have a few technically-minded folks to man the stations and keep the gears from getting rusty; Frank's now gone and I've been unable to tend to things. A big thanks to both of you for stepping up and helping out.

We're currently planning to announce this publicly along with the new Mods additions, so please keep this news "in house" for now.

Not saying we should do it this way, but didn't we "advertise" for new Mods last time? To get a feel for who's interested.

But I kind of like your idea. Throw out a few names who we think would be good and see what they say.

We did that at least once before, during the round when I was added (I was invited to 'apply' by HSKRNOKC). The most recent round was at least a mix; I remember inviting Blackshirtsguru.

I do think advertising has its benefits; it can bring up people we wouldn't have otherwise considered, and be a good indicator of interest. Both are important.

My worry is how to shield the new team from public referendum (i.e, "X applied and you took Y instead?") and some prominent members from hurt feelings (because they have warn histories that would make them hard to consider). I'm not confident in my own ability to run a public call successfully, but to emphasize, it can clearly be done and has been before. I'm all for however you guys are comfortable doing it, as long as we have someone to do it

How much outcry was there from members after the last round of additions? I don't recall too much backlash, but perhaps I'm mistaken. Even if we don't have an application process, people are still going to notice a new mod ("where'd you get that shiny new title?") and so there's really no good way to "shield" the new group.

I think he meant if we do a public call for applications and get a bunch - such that everyone would know who all is under consideration - there could be questions about why we selected one member and not another.

Then have the application process be done privately (i.e., PM a designated person). Post a thread, tell anyone interested to PM a designated person and then lock the thread.

The only real outcry was from people that ended up leaving anyway because they were mad after the purge of 2015.
I'm on mobile, so I can't dig that far back right now, but I'm pretty sure I reached out to zoogs about helping during the last additions.

I like the PM idea, I'd forget to nominate some folks that would do a good job most likely. Getting forgetful in my old age!

Yeah, I think that's a good idea. Also keeps it out of the public eye, and keeps the chances of people getting mad about "X got picked over Y" to a minimum.

If nobody has any objections, then, I'll start an open call / announcement shortly! I'll start another thread keeping a running list of inquiries and we can discuss them there.
