Member Rewards

This place kinda dies in the off season. From May - July, it's absolutely dead in here. Happens all over the place, and one of the ways I've seen for forums to combat dead times is to offer members rewards for posting.

In certain forums you get so many points, or yards, or whatever the increment is, for each post you make. Not every forum earns points, though. We would give points for posts in the Sports forums, but not in the Big Red Lounge, for instance. You could give two points for posts in Husker Football and one for posts in Other Sports, or make them all worth one point.

Members could redeem these points for "prizes," which would be something simple - and free to us - like custom icons or a custom title or something along those lines.

We do have the ability to modify the titles under the avatars, the ones that say "The Bobfather (5001-7000 Posts)" right?

Whatever the "reward" is, the trick is to make it free to us, so we're not out anything.

Yes, we can do that on a individual member basis. The trouble is - how do we track it? Someone would have to locate each member's posts for each day, and where they were posted. I can check the Control Panel to see whether it can be done by some kind of incremental count based on forum, but I don't recall seeing that.

The Board has a feature to create ranks based on "pips", which are described by IP.Board as follows:

Ranking System
Underneath the member's avatar in each post, IP.Board displays a member title. The member title can be customised by the individual member if you have allowed permission (setting) - otherwise, their title will be determined based on their rank.

You will also see either a number of pips or a group image. The group image will be used if one is set by the user's primary user group - otherwise, the appropriate number of pips of image will be displayed for the user's rank.

You can manage ranks via the Members tab in the Manage Member Ranks area. On this page you will see a list of all the ranks. You can edit or delete a rank by choosing the appropriate option from the dropdown menu.

To add a rank, simply fill in the form at the bottom.

You must provide a title (which will be used as the member title if one is not otherwise defined), either a number of pips or an image to use (if a group image is not otherwise defined) and the number of posts a user must have to achieve that rank.

When a user reaches the amount of posts for any rank, they will automatically be given that rank.

It is important to note that a rank only affects the title and rank image - the user's usergroups and permissions will not be affected and are handled independently to ranks. To set up promotion between user groups based on post count, see this article.
I don't think pips are the answer - I think those are some kind of additional image icon or something similar. They are attached to the ranking (total number of posts), but I don't see them as something that would work.

Let me try to get some info on how this works at another site I'm a member of. It's not IP.Board, though, so that could be a problem.

I am a member of about 20 or more message boards. Most of the boards I belong to are sports-based, and they all have the same problem: How do you keep traffic up during the off season? Some have arcade-style games, some run contests, some have little promotional things that pique interest. I have to believe that we could implement something like that here to keep people entertained and clicking on HuskerBoard between April and August. That's why I run the Starting Lineup, why I ran the Hot Chick Draft and why I'm looking into this stuff now.

Here are the rules for "Yards" as given out by the FantasyFootballCafe, which is, as the name suggests, a fantasy football forum.

DescriptionHere you will find additional information for our Yards policy.

In addition to these values, you might receive additional Yards in certain topics.

Please be aware, that the forum owner has the ability to disable complete forums from getting Yards!
What you get for posting in certain areas:

InformationPoints per attachment in a new post: Currently you won't receive any Yards for this

Points for each new attachment: Currently you won't receive any Yards for this

Points for new polls: Currently you won't receive any Yards for this

Points per option in a new poll: Currently you won't receive any Yards for this

Points per word in a new topic: 0 Yards

Points per character in a new topic: Currently you won't receive any Yards for this

Points per word in a new post: 0 Yards

Points per character in a new post: Currently you won't receive any Yards for this

Costs per warning: Currently you don't have to pay any Yards for this

Points bonus with registration: 10 Yards
This whole thing is automated, so there's not much work for the staff after the back-end stuff is coded.
