Hey Husker fans, I'm Foppa. I haven't been posting much in the past week, but have been watching, listening, and soaking all that has transpired lately. If you haven't been following what has been going on in Nebraska...
...welcome Osama Bin Laden...an isolated cave in Afghanistan is a horrible existance, huh?
1) Dave Heineman won the Gubernatorial election...and he is no longer the most powerful and influential person in Nebraska. So...who actually won the election?
2) Nebraska fans may be the most venomous fans in the country. That could be a good or a bad thing. This state went from supportive to a program and coaching staff to 'kill mode' in under 6 weeks. Do I agree with what this team has become? No. But my Gawd...We, as fans, are a serious pack of wolves. I promise I will never stick up for Steve Pederson again, because I think he really railroaded this program, but here is something to think about: He obviously knew that MANY people in this state supported him to fire a coach with a 9-3 record. How many of the same fans were screaming for heads after the KSU debacle that were doing the same thing after OSU last weekend? No hand-raising is necessary, but you were there, and you know. And then it happened. Pederson may be an a$$, but he's not THAT stupid. A 9-3 record. You obviously HAVE to make that decision based on the fact that alot of people want MUCH better. And of COURSE they do. Of course WE do! Not far removed from Paradise?!? Greatest college football team ever?!? What else is there to compare to? Who would've fathomed that it could go the other direction?? I'm not sticking up for Steve or Frank, they both messed up...but the immediate expectations just spun wildly out of control, compared to what NU fans are pining for at this point. But I digress. Again, about us as fans, I'm not sure if this is good or bad. In about double the time it takes to go through rehab (which many a drinking Nebraskan has probably abandoned at this point,) I've listened to excitement and promise for the future (in late August) to every four-letter expletive imaginable dropped on the same people. 'Passionate' fans is one thing. Screaming hatred onto a coach exiting the field with student-athletes leaving beside him at the end of the game is not only pathetic, regardless of what he thinks or what he wants, but just unbelievably un-Nebraskan.
3) If a certain book is accurate about comments made by a certain head coach...he should not only be run out, but never allowed to enter Nebraska ever again. You can talk sh*t about me, about my friends, about pretty much whatever you want...But you don't EVER desecrate a tradition and program and a coach that so many of us hold dear. I don't know what was said, and when employees are fired you never know what is actually truth and what is emotion, but...still. Very disheartening.
4) In Nebraska, it is pretty easy to become God-like status if you know someone who knows someone and events turn out to be true. I'm not saying it is bad to be in the know...I guess I'm too humble to want to be in that position. I would say that that would be 'too much pressure' for me, but then again, I never met Bill Walsh.
5) NU fans will buy into any idea if it will make them feel better. I am actually AMAZED that someone didn't go out and buy a Husker polo and cap, a clipboard, a bank bag, print off some official-looking Husker stationery, and walk the streets of every Nebraska city and town asking for 'monetary support' to buy out contracts, right the ship, raise money to bring Osborne back, etc., and make a killing off 99% of the citizens of Nebraska. Hell, I probably would've. It would look alot better than the Nebraska 'gang-bangers' (You want me to sell what?!?) trying to sell fake magazine subscriptions.
6) Jim Rome, as well as the rest of the country, do NOT hate Nebraska as much as everyone seems to think. Jim Rome is pretty much the exact opposite, and SO many people throughout the country write what they do because they know Nebraska is not what they should be, and they comment on that. And all you great Husker fans should relish the fact that you have contributed to the great respect that has been acknowledged by people all over the country within the last few weeks.
7) If you enjoyed the idea of these 2008 recruits that are coming, you better be able to stomach the fact that many will not come. It's just the nature of the beast. I personally don't consider the sacrifice of Pederson or potentially Callahan an enormous issue, but the fact of the matter is is that NU has some very nice recruits that were supposed to come in. Depending on styles that are going to be coached here they may or may not make a difference...but I would argue that many of these recruits WOULD be influential and productive at Nebraska with a staff that could develop them with the chemistry of NU's old-school recruits that would not only be Nebraska based, but also instill the will of Nebraska football. That segues into the next point...
8) Recruiting could look very strange...and could inflict really bad results...short-term.
Of course any native Nebraskan wants their high-schools' star player walking on at NU. But the reality is is that Osborne had a HUGE reserve to choose from, and yes, he did DEVELOP them. But that is the answer to a well-developed program, not what has been established here in the last few years. If recruiting takes a temporary dive with any new coach, which, depending on who said coach is, is a possibility, there are players who NU may have to rely on who are NOT capable of supplying the firepower to lead NU anywhere towards a powerhouse. Just being realistic. But here's the thing that I still like about this...The kid from Weeping Water to Wisner willing to show what team he plays for on a kickoff. Because he knows what he represents. You can't teach a recruit from La Habra, California what it means to be a Husker from hours of film, from a 'Blackshirt presentation,' a bunch of Adidas gear, a fancy player's lounge, or a potential NFL career. What you can teach them is that that same small-town guy on the scout team who you outweigh, out skill, out-everything, is facing you, challenging you, sometimes beating you, and what are you going to say?
There should be no more coddling, no more favoritism, no more expectations based on anything you've done in the past.
9) The great debate that will probably soon develop. Gill vs. Pelini. Not much doubt about obtaining Gill, some issues in that same sense regarding Pelini, playing out throughout the season more than likely. If one of them is destined to be head NU Football coach, here is what I think:
a. They would both coach NU very well.
b. Both would be very passionate.
c. Pelini's pedigree at LSU would be much more beneficial in recruiting out-of-state. Both would have no problems in-state, IMO.
d. Assistants that would be chosen by either would probably be sufficient. Pelini's could be more flavorful than Gill's, due to his national exposure, but Nebraska has been through this. Is it important? Is it relevant? Will it make a playing-field difference, or is it just another NFL stepping-stone and continuity breaker? Who do you play for?
I'm really not sure what type of fan or poster I enveloped or discouraged on this post. I don't intend to offend anyone, nor inspire anyone, by this post. As I've heard from both Osborne and Callahan this week, "it is what it is." I've seen some real ugliness, both on the field and on this board, and I hope it transpires into something positive. Not wins, for that is a given. But something that makes Nebraskans the people we know we may not be, but strive to become in all elements of uncertainty.
Go Big Red.
