Nebraska and Sellout Streak Milestones

If history is any indicator, the Huskers should celebrate Sellout #400 with a win over Illinois.

The Huskers have had good success in milestone games during the sellout streak, having won each of the previous three centenary games pretty handily.

In 1979, Nebraska defeated Penn State 42-17 in the 100th game of the then 17-year-old sellout streak.

In 1994, Nebraska defeated Colorado 24-7 in the 200th game of the streak.

In 2009, Nebraska defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 55-0 in the 300th game of the streak.

None of those games were particularly competitive. The 1994 Colorado game was the most competitive, but only on the scoreboard. The Huskers led 24-0 early in the third quarter and were never really challenged.

If you break the streak down even further, the Huskers have enjoyed wins on semi-major milestones as well.

In 1971, Nebraska defeated Utah State 42-6 in the 50th game of the streak.

In 1987, Nebraska defeated UCLA 42-33 in the 150th game of the streak.

In 2002, Nebraska defeated Utah State 44-13 in the 250th game of the streak.

In 2016, Nebraska defeated Oregon 35-32 in the 350th game of the streak.

Only one of those games was truly competitive. Nebraska defeated UCLA by nine points in 1987, but that's largely thanks to two garbage-time TDs scored by the Bruins with under four minutes to play. Steve "Air Raid" Taylor torched UCLA for five passing touchdowns.

The 2016 Oregon game was by far the most competitive of any of the major or minor milestone games. Oregon, you may recall, stubbornly insisted on going for two-point conversions after every TD. They were successful on their first attempt, but failed every other time. Tommy Armstrong's gutty run late in the game gave Nebraska a come-from-behind win in front of a packed house.

One other oddity for you - Average attendance for the first three games this year has been 86,508. Presuming at least 86,200 people show up, we'll crack 31,000,000 in total attendance during the sellout streak Friday night.
