P & R Forum

I am against removing the P&R forum and for several reasons:
I admit the P&R forum often causes trouble, but I think it provides a significant value to the forum in more ways than one, particularly from an engagement/pageview perspective. A very small minority of posters have been beating the drum of 'delete the P&R forum' for years and so that is also something to take into consideration.
- It is a pretty significant traffic driver for the site, particularly during the off season; this has been true even more so in the last 6-7 months because of coronavirus and the lack of real sporting news/events.
- Several of our more prominent/respected members have said they would likely leave the site (or significantly lower their activity) if P&R left. I believe this to be true partially in relation to point number one because they spend a lot of time in P&R due to the lack of sporting news/events.
- We can't just 'get rid of the P&R forum' without placing a sitewide ban on political/religious discussion. The P&R forum gives folks an outlet for those conversations. Without it, those topics would spill over into other forums, and this caused a lot of problems in recent years (including a lot of headaches for admins/moderators). This is one of the biggest reasons we we have prohibited P&R conversations outside of P&R since 2017.
- The P&R forum is like any other forum on this board - if someone doesn't like the topics/content, they are not obligated to view it. I don't know why man eating mastadon believes the forum should go away, so without that context, I would argue that he is viewing the situation through a myopic lens without taking the bigger picture into account.

But this pretty much sums up what seems to go in in P&R. JJ just blasted Notre Dame Joe by quoting what I assume NDJ posted in P&R but JJ quoted them in the Shed and then proceeded to call him every name in the book. And then put Mods on blast in a different thread in the Shed bemoaning the fact that NDJ hasn't been banned.
JJ's post is below but the quotes from NDJ don't carry over so you'd have to go to that post to see NDJ's statements that JJ was apparently completely bent out of shape about. But unless there are much worse things from NDJ that JJ didn't quote and he for some reason only quoted the much tamer versions, there isn't anything in there anywhere close to being what a bunch of the P&R police have been complaining about for days about NDJ. They insist that he's stupid and trolling. All he is (based on what JJ quoted) is partisan on the opposite side of the aisle from them.
But that crew is convinced that they are the paragon of political discussion such that anyone who would dare disagree with them has to be a complete idiot or just a troll. Because no sane person could possibly see things any differently than they do.

I will say this - I think NDJ is one of the most delusional posters in that forum. I don't know why he is the way he is and I find it personally deplorable. BUT, the things he says really are no different than what a lot of people on the 'other' side of the fence say. And as I constantly hammer home to people... having a dissenting and even delusional opinion is not necessarily against board rules. At this point, I don't think there's enough evidence to suggest he's "trolling" any more than a lot of other folks in that forum. By the same definition they're trying to apply to NDJ, I'd say knapplc is as much of a troll.
For example, it is apparently completely OK for our P&R police to deal in absolutes, call Trump an idiot, nail his policies to the wall, etc., all under the guise that they can do it because "they're right." But the moment anybody with the exact opposite perspective finds their way into the forum then that person is a troll, despite the fact that there are literally millions of people out there who hold similar views to NDJ.
I've decided to largely stop engaging with our little P&R army about the topic, particularly knapp. It's funny how so many of them want us to ban NDJ yet they continue to engage with him by choice. They can't make the mature decision to do the right thing and just ignore him, so their only alternative is to get mom & dad (i.e. board leadership) to take care of it and that's BS in my opinion.

I personally think that part of the board is a cesspool and I avoid it when I can. It does drive discussion I suppose, but it's the same old people over and over again. I'd rather not have P&R all over the board and I'd rather have it in one spot, but I think it causes a ton of hard feelings with folks because P&R is such a passionate topic.

I absolutely think it is. He's not doing it to harbor honest conversation - he's doing it because he has a personal problem with NDJ, believe's he's a "Trumpist" troll and doesn't feel like NDJ belongs on the board.
