Planning first trip need some help

So my wife just agreed to letting me plan my first trip ever to a husker football game. We will be coming from columbus ohio. Im planning on trying to get tickets for the sep 4th game against western ky. Ive never been to lincoln before, Im originally from the Kearney area but really grew up elsewhere.....anyhow the closest Ive ever gotten to lincoln is seeing it from I80 driving across the state to visit family.

So long story short, I was looking at staying at the Cornhusker Marriott hotel downtown, and was wondering if that is a good location and within walking distance to the stadium. Also what is the best place to grab tickets. Ive noticed in some of the places like stubhub they are amazingly cheaper than osu tickets. Are there better areas in the stadium than others...hate to use an ohio state reference but there are certain areas in B deck where you sit behind pillars, and C deck makes you feel like you are one sneaze away from falling to your death.

I feel like a little kid getting to plan this...Im all giddy, knowing that Ill finally get to go to a game....Ive been waiting for this since I was a little kid....only took a little over 30 years :)

I want to experience the full game day that other people and friends have told me about, so any help would be very much welcomed.

 
The cornhusker is within walking distance, although it is a little more "blue haired" than the Embassy Suites or Holiday Inn. It just does not have the same atmosphere the latter hotels possess. Those hotels are where the party is each weekend. The Embassy has a deck party pre and post game, anyone can attend but if you stay at the hotel you get a couple free drink tickets. That was the case a couple years ago, either way the bars in both those hotels are hopping on game day.

Depending on your age, "O" street will be the place to hang out! They are something like 15+ bars along the street and each will have a different atmosphere. There are also bars/restaurants in the Haymarket area, which are also suitable for pre and post drinks/food.

Tickets you can get from just about anywhere; Ebay, Stubhub, this website, facebook ticket exchange (huskers official page. You also might try to call the athletic office the week of game day, sometimes the visitors return unsold tickets. Prices are going to lower given the opponent that weekend and it is labor day weekend (might have a small effect). Either way tickets will not be hard to get.

As far as seating goes, I suggest avoiding the South side, the students sit there and they have general admission tickets. You do get a great view of the awesome scoreboard. West and East side might have obstructed views due to pillars if you sit high enough within the lower section. Most of the wealthy blue hairs sit on the West side, particularly on the 2nd level of West. East might be the way to go, Band is located nearest the SE corner. North is where I would avoid, you have to turn around (180 degrees) to view the huge scoreboard/replay screen. There are 4 other sizable screens, each located in the corners of the stadium. (NE,NW, SE, SW) Might try google maps to get a birds eye view of the stadium.
